Default 85 Euro rebuild thread

Since we are going wild on this I thought I would use this thread to ask questions and update our progress.

Time for gears?

Its kind of hard to tell from this angle. Do the teath have a visibly worn area in the center where the belt runs? If so, they are trash. SOme say that if the gear is shiny in that area they are trash but I disagree. The belt is going to polish a new gear in short order IMO.

What did you decide to do about the broken A/C tabs?

Teeth look fine, the belt was very very loose.

Ouch!! The compressors are pretty spendy. What about the tabs?

Are you upgrading the tensioner while you have it apart?

I need some help on the Air pump bypass, It's removed and i need to know how and what to block off, look what the P.O. did so it will not be straight forward.
I got the porken tensioner, looking at a used compressor on e-bay.

To remove and block off the plumbing for the air pump:
You can remove all the plumbing above the right side bank from the pump to the back of the heads.

Order 2 plugs P/N900 219 004 02 ($3 apiece), and 2 sealing rings P/N 900 123 018 30 ($3.80 apiece)

This will cap off the holes at the back of the heads.

I think you need to cap a hole in the bottom of the airbox with any run-of-the-mill rubber tapered plugs.

I did a shoddy writeup on this a wile back

Those gears are worn to the point that they should be replaced.

if you do not replace them you should use much shorter belt intrevals.

On what are you basing your statement?

Fabio,

You can clearly see that the antiwear protective coating has worn off the high parts of the teeth. Once this happens the aluminum under it causes a more rapid rate of wear to the belts. If it wears to far it can cause sharp edges and actually cut the belt.

If you know what new gears look like you can clearly see this, as well you can see that the coating is also wearing off down into the U for the teeth as well.

IMO these are a wear item and when that protective coating is gone you replace them. They are NOT expensive at all, and part of owning the car. Just like going through a few set of tires a year if you drive hard.

I would say they ARE expensive at $100 each. My personally opinion is if they are shiny but NOT dished or grooved, they are good for one more go around. Mine were bad and have been replaced.

My thoughts exactly.

well I guess we all have our own idea as to what expensive is. But once that coating is gone the gears themselves will wear at a much more rapid rate as well.

The chance of them cutting the belt is low, but I have heard of belts being cut from sharp edges on the gears.

when wearing, the teath normally become more rounded, not sharp.

Didn't Heinrich try to get some gears re-anodized? If I remember correctly, the gears are not aluminum, they are magnesium and cannot be anodized

Fabio, Big dave had a few gears he recoated, then later had issues with that coating around the lockdown area which prevented it from holding posistion.

I have considered recoating a few pairs I have, just havent had time. I should search my email and find that company again.
