Where did the horn wires go?
Newbie here, trying to get the '80 928 auto ready to pass state inspection. The horn didn't work, and after detaching the aftermarket momo knock off I found out why. Does anyone know where I should hook up new wires? Maybe the screw at 6:00 or do I have to undo the rest of the pod and go fishing?

Well it looks as though the PO has either removed the brass tongue which attached at little past 12 o'clock which in turn on a stock steering wheel came in contact with the brass or copper ring installed on the hub of the steering wheel, which in turn is connected to a wire within the steering wheel that plugs into the horn pad. Hope this info helps. By the way if you haven't already joined rennlist I can assure you it will be the best few dollars you've spent towards you car. Lots of great help here from new and old members. Good Luck in getting your inspected and on the road!

Burning Brakes
There should be one wire coming out of the center of the steering column shaft. At least on the '85 that wire connects to the horn pad. I am not sure but I don't think there are any other wires. I have not traced the wire back to determine where it enters the steering column shaft.

So if I wasn't clear...that little bit of brass or gold color at about 1 o'clock should be the hot contact..if I'm not wrong....it is on my 83......

No it won't be in it.... right now I've been redoing what the PO had done while he owned it.....and trying to locate why my marker lites refuse to go off.....even whenI'm done it will be a driver...I don't think it will ever be show material....lol

Yes it is quite the show.....Well on Sunday I will be at work so if you'd like to say hello...Stop into the SKIERSHOP on the Mtn Rd and ask for Bob. When not in the 928, I run Audis. Look forward to meeting you if you've the time.

Looks like you are missing the horn ring. To my recollection there is no wire to the wheel - there is instead a sprung contact on the back of the stock wheel that contacts the circular horn ring - the wires go to that stationary element that is bolted on top of the combo switch... at least on a GTS.

NJ are you staying with the MOMO wheel? If you are then you'll need to connect to that spot or feed off of it to power up the momo horn button. If going with a stock steering wheel you'll need to fabricate the horn spring clip as Alan describes. The only Wire in a Stock setup is within the steering wheel hub under the horn pad, the wire is only there between the two. Good Luck!

well, I know this isn't the right way, but its what was handy... and the lamp cord jury-rigged version didn't seem to produce the desired outcome (horn noise). I connected to the brass spot and the back of the horn button from the momo knockoff. What am I missing? a ground... a clue...

The wire is part of the stock steering wheel hub and the Momo adapter. The first shot shows the wire inside the stock wheel, attached to the base of the hub. The horn ring is part of the hub. Second shot shows what the underside of the Momo adapter looks like, which would be like the underside of the stock steering wheel's hub. And the third shot shows the adapter mounted. Finally the Momo wheel.

Your horn button is different from mine. Mine grounds to the hub via a brass spring piece on the outside edge of the button. Your button has a second tang on the bottom that must be ground. Look for a place on the hub to use as a ground point. My Momo wheel center hole had a tang for a ground wire (see it circled in red in the last photo).
