Will 89 S4 LSD auto tranny fit in an 84?
I did a search and didn't find much.
I was wondering if a 1989 auto tranny with LSD can be swapped into a 1984 auto w/o LSD?
Cheers,

It would be cheaper if you just bought a factory turbo instead.

I'm just looking to replace the 84 trans and came across the 89 S4 trans w/LSD and was wondering if it would work as a replacement?
IIRC the gears are different?
Thanks,

Tom,
89 US gearing is 2.54, the 84 US is 2.20, trans gear spacing is also different. I'm no expert but the 84 is a 4 speed like the 89. There is difference with cables in 84/85/86 vs S4. The 89 torque converter also has a different stall speed, you should get it with the trans. 89 is probably the best year LSD 928 auto trans due to the gearing and no worries about PSD. Not sure if you can adapt the 84 cables to the 89, if so, go for it.
Probably wouldn't pay over $1300 for it.
I have an 89 LSD I'm going to put in my 87, one for one swap. I have Constantine's clamp and will rebuild the torque tube with his bearings. That way if I boost the Strosek down the road I will be ready.
Cheers,
Glenn

WTB - 89 auto/LSD/2.54
searching threads and think I have confirmed what I recall reading in the past about the 89 auto.
the 89 auto is LSD and has lower gearing than my 84 tranny.
are there other good options to find an auto w/LSD and lower ratio?
now that all my major mechanical refresh is done, including headers and 3" exhaust, considering the next phase in the evolution.
it sounds like the 89 auto/LSD/2.54 would perk up my 84 a bit.
a supercharger is on the list but will have to wait for a little while longer.
anyone got one to sell? I would consider one that needs a rebuild. actually may prefer to ensure what I install will last a LONG time.

If you go with a SC you will want to keep the 2.20 transmission. guys with SC'd cars without LSD have no problems spinning both rear tires.
When I get my Strosek SC'd I will keep the non-LSD 2.20 in it to see how it does before going to a 2.20 LSD diff.
