Default Confused about PS pump part number

I may be looking for a new or reconditioned pump soon (as per my recent thread "Help, no power steering"). My 928 is an 88 S4.

PET lists the pump for up till 1990 as 928.347.089.01

But then it gives same part number for 91 MY on a separate line. Is this a typo as I thought the newer cars had higher pressure pump?

To compound the confusion when I reconditioned the pump (which may have toasted it!) I bought the 928.347.921.01 repair kit which is described as the repair kit for 928.347.921.00

I ordered this kit as I assumed that this p/n was correct, and PET should have listed the -90 pump as 928.347.089.01 (it had all the correct size gaskets for my pump)

But maybe the description of repair kit was wrong, and 928.347.089.01 is the right number? That's the one I need to confirm as I'll be shopping for a -90 pump if I can't fix the existing one.

I went down this path but from the other end. The 91 pump is different from the 87-89 (and maybe the GTS). MY91 is when they went to the 100 bar pump. I believe the older style pumps are now rebuilt to 100 bar specs, but becasue the mounting points are different, they are not interchangable. Oh, the inside seals are also very different, so you'll know immediately if you have the right kit or not.

Thanks Andrew - the seals were all correct shape/size in the kit so it must have been correct kit for my (MY 88) pump.

Good tip on the 100 bar pump having different mount points as I was wondering about getting a higher output pump. Will stick with one that just bolts right in for now.

So does anyone know the correct p/n for a MY 88 pump? It's either 928.347.089.01 or 928.347.089.00

The xxx.xxx.xxx.01 pump is probably the updated version (same basic design, mounting points, etc.) that now runs at a higher psi for MY85-90.

I have a brand new in the box high output Griffiths pump for sale for $175 plus shipping.
Customer ordered it and then changed his mind.
Fits 85 to 95 cars and normally sells for $189.

Yes - new not reconditioned or remanufactured.
They also claim a 25% boost in pressure.

That's a fantastic price for a new pump Roger. Porsche in the UK wanted almost $1000 + VAT for a new one and even exchange is $600!

Have found some cheaper sources for pumps but nothing like your price. Trouble is I am up against a deadline and have to drop car with mechanic this week, and he has access to old pumps if mine is toast. If I had the time I would definitely buy one of your pumps but is it an exact replacement for the ZF unit, taking the same bracket so bolting into cassette the same way?

Its the same pump that Dave and Jeannie at 928 specialists sells and looks identical to the current Porsche pump. Griffiths sells a lot of them so I am sure it fits with no issues.
Express mail takes 5 days and is $45 as the pump weighs 4 Lbs.

For the record I sell the remanufactured ZF pump for $341 plus a $200 core charge.
So this is a good deal.

Thanks for the photos and mail details Roger - yes it looks an identical fit. Great price but now my car is booked in I'll see what my mechanic can sort with the pump and assess it when I get the car back.

When I drove a 91 with high o/p pump it transformed the steering feel at low speed. I may decide to fit the Griffiths pump anyway as I've recently had a lot of practice dropping alternator and removing pump (3 times in a few days) as per my "help, no power steering thread", so I know it's easy to change it.

This brings up an interesting question, do the cars with the newer 100 bar pumps in them have a higher rack failure rate? The reason I ask is I have gotten tired of replacing racks in my 968, I called the re-builder and he felt the pump pressure was to high, apparently this is common for German cars. Apparently the pressure ratings in some German cars are the same as American 1 ton+ trucks. The 968 is rated for between 100-120 bar. The theory being the higher pressures are causing more stress on the rack end seals, especially at full lock.

I'm looking at possibly replacing the pump in my 86.5 928 with 64k on the clock. It doesn't have much of any assist, so I'm starting to research pumps. Perhaps the 928 pumps are different but I have know them to usually fail by way of leaks, not losing pressure, so I'm a little perplexed with it, especially with the miles on it. Going to get it aligned first since I know it's off (inner tires balding), so that might help. Between my old 944S and my 968 I have replaced 4 racks, and just did one this weekend on a friends 928, so I really don't want to see my rack leaking after I replace the pump.
