I've been searching on the forums quite a bit, and doing as much research as I can trying to figure out which place is best for getting a 928 insured. Most of the places that do collector/classic car insurance are pretty restrictive as to where you can drive. I'm down to either American Collectors Insurance (americancollectors.com), Hagerty or Classic Auto Insurance (classicins.com) after ruling out the companies that were too restrictive for me.
I'll put under 3k miles on it a year, and it will not be my daily driver for work. I of course plan on driving it a fair amount in the summer, and not much in the winter (only on dry, very nice days to keep it out of the snow/chemicals, etc) However, I would like the ability to drive it to work occasionally in the summer (only about 5 miles one way)... and I'm not sure if that would be allowed under either of those insurance companies. Anyone know just how restrictive these 3 companies are and if that would be allowed under their insurance? I'm leaning towards Hagerty at the moment, since I've read a lot of good things about them On the occasional days that I drove it to work, it would be parked in a very secure spot, not on a street.
If none of these 3 would allow that, anyone have any suggestions as to what insurance company would allow that for someone who was looking to get collector/classic car insurance?

My insurrance for my '79 is 149$ per years.
Bumper to bumper.
My limitation are : 5000 miles per years, summer only, and to not get out of the country.
But I'm insured on other car too since I'm first driver on my 928.![Big Grin](https://rennlist.com/forums/images/smilies/biggrin.gif)
(As second driver on a Matrix, I had to pay 450$/years)

I am currently on full insurance through Geico, but have been investigating Collector Car insurance since I do not put too many miles on my 928. Geico does not offer collector car insurance and referred me to American Modern:
http://www.amig.com/products/collector-extras.html
They quoted me around $400+ per year for my 84 928 with an agreed value of $15K (including add-ons such as new wheels). Limitation was 5K miles per year with an allowance to drive the car to work up to 2 times per week.

My shark is insured through Hagerty's, which I chose because they were the least restrictive of the three I talked to and they offered an agreed-value policy based on Cars the Matter estimate, which I found to be fairly accurate. (Many insurers will only cover you for KBB book value, which can be fairly low for old models. My regular insurer would only value my 30k mile very-good-condition 1989 GT at about $8k, which was laughable.)
I was surprised to find that the restrictions they discussed with me over the phone are not actually written into the policy. They use the mileage and usage restrictions to set your premium, but the policy itself does not exclude any coverage (until you drive into the pit lane of a race track, that is), so take those "restrictions" with a grain of salt. I don't know how the other carriers handle them, but that's how Hagerty's works. The other thing I really liked about them is that everyone I talked to there is a total car nut and/or gear head. And they have a great magazine.
If you want more freedom in usage and to reduce the premium, but are not concerned with the valuation of the car, consider carrying "regular" insurance for the driving season only.
Good luck!

I use the americancollectors on my 88 S4. Their limit are the miles, occasional drive to work is ok. I use Hagerty for my 1984 911. My understanding is the car needs to be over 20 year old with Hagerty. The 88 S4 was too young to go with them at the time. Be prepare to send them lots of picture of the car and jump thru some hoops

lightstriker sounds like he might be with Leyland West. My '80 was exactly the same as the policy he has.
I have JUST moved my cars over to JC Taylor at a savings to me of over $600/year vs. Leyland West. I had looked into another company (I thought it was Hagerty) but they would not even let you use the car AT ALL other than for "CLUB" events of some kind. No, the weather looked good so I went for a drive and had an accident, kind of coverage even. If you could not show you were going to a club event you were going to be OUT! Again, I can't remember if it was in fact Hagerty that told me this, but I was just tired of every year doing the odo thing with Leyland, not to mention saving $600+ is never a bad thing!
I am interested in American Collectors.
Oh, JC Taylor has a 15 year age minimum and stated values (as my agent explained it to me anyway). My '94 won't be eligible for their insurance till the end of this year, then I will add it to the mix and the $600 savings will be complete (ie. now I am only saving a small amt because I have a regular policy for the '94 GTS)...
Good luck!

Thanks for all the information
I spent a good part of today (when not at the courthouse getting temp tags) calling insurance companies. That amig.com insurance company sounded pretty good. They sent a quote over and I was surprised how low it was (around $300) and they allow driving it to work 2 times a week. Once I'm back from my trip I'll probably fill out the app from them, send over all the pictures they want, and see if I can get insurance through them.

I've got a dumb question for all you insurance-savvy folks: With an agreed-value policy how the heck do you figure out the agreed value?
With conventional insurance the company will pay "actual cash value", almost certainly not adequate to replace a well-above-average car-- at least without an enormous hassle. An agreed-value policy removes the hassle-factor, and (within reason) a higher value insures that you can actually replace the car if needed-- at the expense of a higher premium. But with the market for these cars all over the map (especially now), how do you figure out a reasonable valuation ???
Any pearls of wisdom gratefully accepted!
Thanks, Jim

Hi Jim....I would think, at least up here in Canada, in order to get the fixed value an appraisal would be done by an auto appraiser. My 86 was valued at 16,000 and the insurance company will pay that much with the taxes included. Does that help.........Bill

Hi all,
In Portugal a car that has 25 year old or more is considered a classic, assuming it's in his original form, or very very near original.
Then we can have classic insurance, 52€ a year, no mileage limitations, the only condition is that you have a second car registered in your name that they consider it's a daily drive.
That, of course, won't avoid that you can use the 928 daily, so I really don't understand what's the point of tha condition, but they probably do....

With Hagerty, they asked what I wanted to insure it for and confirmed that I was within range of the Cars That Matter price guide. They didn't have an appraiser look it over, but they did want to see as many pictures as I would send them as some form of physical confirmation.
