Default 1986.5 Question

did the 86.5's come with 288HP or 316HP?
and did the 5 speed and the automatic have the same HP rating?

i found one reference that states they added the brakes and it had 288HP after VIN "1000" and i found another reference that says it had big brakes and 316HP after
VIN "1000"...??

They come rated at 288hp in auto and 5spd however there are more ponies in there with a few simple mods.

The change after the VIN is only for the S4 suspension and brakes. The power is the same from with the Auto and the 5-speed as already stated. I think ABS was standard on those later cars also. NO power jump though.

302Tq on the 85/86 S's... I think 1000 was the change over VIN for S4 brakes...

Daymon
The 86.5 was an MY 86 with a VIN greater than 1000 (approximately)....these late 86's came with full S4 suspension and brakes and ABS..... The 5.0L 32V is rated at 288hp 302 ftlbs of torque...same as the MY 85.... The biggest difference between the 85-86 5.0L motor compared to the S4+ motor is the two stage intake on the S4 and the upgraded computers with knock sensors.... The S4 also has milder cams, but larger valves....

With new chips there is quite a nice bump in HP on the 85-86's...however since there is no knock sensors you need to be careful too....

Stop it!
I started down the Craigslist/Ebay trail for an 86.5+ many moons and dollars ago.
And, of course, I don't consider the 81' or, the Weissach to be banjo playing, retarded
928 hill-kin. But I sure do want one before the 250,000 mile crosses the odometer of the
lowest milage example on the planet.
So when did we drop the 1200 vin (approx) as the start of the 85.6's ??????????
Someday ....

In addition to the bigger brakes and updated suspension, the 86.5's also came with "true" dual exhaust

Yep better exhaust system means more horse power at the wheels. Due to that dual exhaust it received a smaller battery and battery box.

Which does make more HP (but is quieter) than the squashed single side 'dual' on the 85-86.0, but I don't think Porsche wanted to bother with publishing new ratings. My '86.5, with refreshed intake and simple mods makes GT like power, and it's an automatic!

86.5 is literally the foundation for the S4.

revised ABS
new floor pan
third brake light
true dual exhaust
smaller battery/box
new front suspension
delayed interior lights
revised rear suspension
4-piston calipers, larger rotors
additional front brake cooling air dam
windows work w/key off until door is opened
+ more

I think the lack of knock sensors is the primary reason why the 85-86.5 models use the larger 24lb/hour fuel injectors.

I am confused as to what "true" duel exhaust is. My MY 85' has factory exhaust which is one pipe for each exhaust header. In other words 2 pipes 2 seperate cats 2 pipes to 1 intermediate, mid muffler, then 2 pipes to 1 "pumpkin" rear exhaust W/ 2 outlets at the end of the 'pumpkin"
I did cut off the rear "pumpkin" exhaust and made my own RBM.
