12 ton jack stands are the norm. I have had some close calls with the hydraulic jack and uneven pavement.

I am sure Ken's liftbars are perfect in every way, and I have the utmost respect for the guy and his ideas.

My next purchase is Capt'n Karl's re-enforcing thingys that go over the inner rails to keep them from jacking damage. I don't know if the lift bars are usable jacking on the inner rail, but I have never liked the set up of jacking on the Porsche dimple thingy. My jack has small wheels and moves, but there are forces unevenly distributed on it and it always bothers me the way the wheels move with a jerk.

Sounds like an issue with your jack and/or jacking surface. This should have nothing to do with the jack points on the car.

Part of the science of floor jacks is that you need to 'aim' the jack at the point that will be most stable as you lift the car. That way the jack can roll straight towards the stable point and won't have to roll sideways as you lift or lower. That's one of the big benefits of the bars-- you know that you just need to point the jack straight acoss the car and it won't try to pull sideways.

Lifting from just the jack points is fun but takes a little care. Lifting the first side from the rear point extends the rear suspension on the far side so the car tries to crab a bit as you raise it. The 'stable' point aim starts out directly across the car if I lift left side first, but depending on the amount of gas in the tank that aim needs to change mid-lift. Maybe need to do the gas tank side first, get the front stand set, then goto the left side for the second lift. Third is then from the rear crossmember to get the butt up, stands under the rear jack points.

I've used Ken's bars and they are a nice safe solution, definitely a timesaver. But having them would kill the need to have a real two-post lift. Don't want to risk that!!

Got me one of these:

I like the big wide front roller instead of those tiny front caster wheels. The front wheels are what takes the most of the load. Got tired of messing with a small cheap jack.

Took me a long while to figure out that the pivot action of the lifting arm pulls the jack away from you when jacking up the car. Duh!

This thread has been helpful in explaining how the hydraulic floor jack is supposed to work. Until now, I never understood the importance of having the jack "creep" under the car while it is being lifted. I do think I will get another set of lift-bars from Ken - but this time the right ones for my car! (my compatriot and fellow Rennlister who sold me the ones at issue here graciously offered to buy them back - which hopefully, I'll be able to sell them first to one of the locals in the 928 group here)....We do need a local 2 or 4 post lift however

Correct the lifting pad on the jack scribes an arc ....in the initial lifting it is mostly vertical but near the upper limit there is a lot of near horizontal movement and either the car must move or the jack. I change wheels a lot at the track always carry at least four extra wheels and simply lift one side of the car with the jack both wheels come up easily, it is the alloy larger size low profile "racing Jack".

I have that jack, too. It is an awesome harbor freight deal.

I have two others two. It is always a circus when I lift my car.
