Default Heads-up re: "chassis research"

I want to describe a very frustrating situation and hopefully prevent others from experiencing the same crap I dealt with. Rennlister “chassis research” posted various ‘wanted’ threads seeking 18” wheels. Since I have numerous 993 wheels in my shop, I sent a PM to Marty and described what I had. He replied and indicated that he would only need a set of rear wheels and for me to let him know a price. As I was not actively selling the wheels, I suggested he name a price that would work for him. His response was fair, so I requested his address in order to supply a shipping quote. I took one of the 10” wheels to FedEx and received a quote for two identical packages. Then I swung by the UPS Store to purchase two boxes. I touched base with Marty again and gave him the shipping amounts. He responded and stated that the funds would hit his PayPal account any day. Meanwhile, I cleaned and properly packaged the wheels, and addressed the boxes. A few days passed with no contact from Marty, so I sent a follow-up PM. Again, I was told that the money should be available any moment and that he would forward it immediately. I actually spoke with him on the phone and he was as nice as could be, even laughing and asking, “You must be wondering what’s going on with that guy!”

This was the last I heard from Martin Lackner. I called his company (EELCO) numerous times, and each time was told that he was either on the phone or out running errands. After the fourth or fifth call, the woman answering the phone said, “You sound pretty upset, I’ll give you Marty’s cell number.” True to form, Marty also failed to return the message I left on his cell phone.

At the end of the day, this was a very frustrating situation that luckily only cost me the price of two shipping boxes. I’ve been on Rennlist for years, have engaged in dozens of perfectly normal transactions, and have never come across an individual like this. I’ve even shipped items off in advance of receiving payment – since the other person’s online presence allowed me to trust their promise of pending payment. I’d say my Rennlist history speaks for itself.

So, before doing any business with Martin Lackner, aka “chassis research”, think about the foot dragging I dealt with. If I learned one lesson, it was to always do a Google search for a person’s name. In this case, I was absolutely floored by the information that I read…..

I had a similar experience, he promised to buy my wheels, but had "Pay Pal" problems.

I told him to just send me a check, I am still waiting. Fortunately all it cost me was my time.

I purchased an A/C compressor from him. Took a while to get it, but I did receive it. Hopefully it works as represented when I get around to installing it.

That should eliminate additional frustrations, at least around these parts!

I would love to know the story behind him being banned. Especially since he was endorsed by two well respected listers and is now trying to "buy" things from people on Pelican. Alot of Rennlisters post there as well and may be taken for a ride. Think of it as a public service anouncement.

He sent me--for free--a seat belt latch that I needed to disable the airbag on my wife's 996. He wouldn't take payment for it or shipping, just suggested it was a pay-it-forward kind of thing. FWIW.

I bought a headliner from him. It took a couple of weeks and a few e-mails, but I got it. He had me worried when it didn't show, but all-in-all, he seemed like a good guy.

I'll stand by my original post, word for word. It was meant as a public service announcement. My integrity on Rennlist speaks for itself.

If Marty indeed experienced PayPal troubles, he could quite easily have sent payment by one of a dozen other socially-acceptable means...
