Probably could pass the first test, maybe not the second if some sharks were being driven out there at the same time...

Isn't that called a "graded license"? It has been proposed for as long as I can remember driving an automobile, and for good reason. The problem is not everyone's reasoning is good.

Yeah, in my old life racing motocross this became apparent: some of the amateur class guys are as fast as the experts, but dumb stuff always seems to happen to them. Part of being an expert is good judgement in the heat of the moment. If I had $1 for every guy that crashed in front of me and I just rode around him, I'd be loaded.

How many times did everyone have to pass on the right for every opportunity to pass on the left? Is defending the left lane on the first page of all mini-van owners manuals? G

His post in another forum indicates he was respectful:

You are talking about disparate abilities: what about disparate speeds, the greatest cause of judgement error?

How do you keep the old geezer (and his dog) in the pick-up or the lumbering FedEx truck from pulling out in front of you? As long as you are on a public highway, you have to (unfortunately) accommodate all drivers. You must have seen the thread on the guy w/red S4 who got clipped by a van on the freeway and luckily only has broken CV joints to show for it. It's hard to tell exactly what happend from his discription, but he says he was doing less than 40; IIReadC, there must have been disparity btw his speed and the perp.

Valid point, but the ability of a driver includes recognizing conditions and preparing for most possibilities.

In my case I long for less restricted speeds on limited access highways. I think your reference is valid in non-highway situations, and clearly speed needs to be limited there.

If speeds were generally higher the less abled drivers would stay away or become better abled. The old geezers and lumbering Fed-Ex trucks wouldn't belong there, and don't now.

In reality driving 50mph on the parkway already includes the possibility of grave danger, as tourists pull over almost anywhere and ignorantly stand by their car on blind corners. For such people there isn't any speed low enough to make them safe, the solution is to make those people more conscious. I don't think there is a quick solution to that. They are the same people that read while driving, drive in the left lane while talking on the cell phone and are unaware of the havoc they create in traffic, etc.

I don't think the person driving fast is remotely the largest threat to safety on the roads.

Not to mention the cyclists trying to jam up the hills at 5mph. Makes for a very high close speed situation especially round the blind corners.

Found a car pulled over after a blind right hander on BRP.
Luckily they had their flashers on.
Not sure why they had to pull over. Wonder if someone got real car sick and needed to express their displeasure to the grass shoulder.

What do they do in Germany? Rigidly and severely enforced lane discipline and exponentially more difficult driver education and licensing requirements. Keep right except to pass is a way of life. Zero tolerence for left lane hogs or for passing on the right. Tougher safety and maintenance standards for all vehicles. And a prerequisite for possession of a functioning brain. (Well, maybe not the last one exactly .... but close to it). And with the speed differential their safety record is BETTER than our archaic and flawed system's record.

Novel concept-- slower cars to the right, faster cars pass on the left. Amazingly, it really is the law here in Cali too.

Was just on the lovely Garden State Parkway in Joisey.
5 lane highway.
Slow traffic was on the 2nd from LEFT lane. A few of the slower cars were actually on the right lane. Guess they may just be temporarily there for merging on and off the highway.
