On an '85 there is no delay relay.

I have no idea how this light behaviour can happen - the car is not supposed to be wired that way. However someone else mentioned similar behaviour a while ago... I had no explanation then either...

For this behaviour you would have to have a diode between the door lights and the rest... You haven't installed LED bulbs have you?

Alan, no LED lights, is there a wire that would go to the door lights from the rear hatch? (sorry about the thread hijack)

Yes there should be - whats interesting is that there obviously is because the door switches turns on both sets... doesn't seem to make much sense.

New problem found TODAY! Went out to drive the '92 GTS and dead as a door nail. Put the car on the charger and looked inside... ALL LIGHTS ARE ON! The drivers side door pin switch has been changed out to a non-factory unit, but I am not sure that is the problem...

I did not start the car, but I did turn the key all the way around to the on position and pushed the door pin switch...lights were STILL ON! I am guessing this is a switch issue (it had been intermittent of late and acting up).

Love to hear your thoughts on this guys...

The wire from the switch may have fallen off of the switch and dropped down inside the jamb, shorting to ground and activating the light. The connector may not have fit properly on the non-factory switch, and/or the person installing it may not have accounted for the fact that the wire twists when installing. You have to either keep the center pin stationary as you thread in the outer barrel, or if the design doesn't allow for this you have to twist the wire counter-clockwise before installing so it will unwind to a relaxed state after installation.

If the other door switch or the hatch switch is faulty, or the brown/white wire is shorted to ground anywhere, operation of that door switch will do nothing. You need to test - don't jump to the conclusion that the door switch is faulty.

I agree with Wally, Richard K had this issue and the it was the rear hatch pin that broke. Was entertaining because every time he he hit a bump, this lights would come on in the car.

The most likely culprit is actually the rear hatch switch.. pull off the brown/white wire from the switch under the hatch receiver - if the lights go out thats the culprit

just unplug the harness and check from there. The parts actually are two different ones. The harness and the pin switch.

Thanks for the tip Alan/Sean. My dome light was perpetually lit before I tore things apart. One of my first plans of action when I get the motor put back together is to track this down.

You live in Texass - isn't that where "the lights are on, but nobody's home".

My pin switch was broken since I bought the car. Never even knew that the hatch was supposed to turn the lights on. Found it on accident.

All who said hatch pin switch... Winner Winner, Chicken Dinner for you! That was the culprit. Next time Rog heads this way I will have him bring another hatch receiver and we will fix it right up... the plastic is all broken up so sometimes the pin get pushed down, sometimes NOT...when NOT the lights drain the battery! We just unplugged it to fix that for the time being!

Thanks guys!

Anybody have a picture of the hatch pin switch or its location? I'm thinking mine's kaput as well after reading this thread.

Its underneath the hatch receiver trace the brown/white wire under there.

I think usually when this switch breaks its just the switch not the hatch receiver parts - and the switch is replaceable on its own. Mostly when it breaks it fails "on" rather than "off" due to the (very simple) design of the switch.
