"Blind date"......
she looks like a two-bagger. With some paint, maybe no bags. A solid OB may have been a safer bet if you can't spend much $$$ now. S4s have a lot of stuff to fix in there...

CARL! - Nice to see you online. You gave me my first ride in your 89 if you remember.

I'll let you know what's up with the hood when I find out...

I just ordered some used lenses from International. May it will pass inspection with those.

The evil bay route may be best. Polish that turd up and if it runs you can probably sell it for $6-7K.

If the mechanics are good he got a good deal. I'd buy it for what he paid.

You know I was just thinking it looks like a theft recovery car.

I was just assuming the engine is in as rough of shape as the exterior. There is a good likelyhood that this car is going to end up significantly more expensive than finding a "good deal" on a car in better shape.

Okay guys - here's an update...

I just went down and picked up the car.

Random
Although it's been sitting for at least two years, I drove it home. About two blocks into the drive, I got the tension light.... kept driving. It drives straight with tight steering. The brakes are good - a little noisy as the pads work through the rusty rotors. It has option 220 - locking differential. The cruise control works. It's missing the glass for the driver's side mirror. the digital clock has a broken screen. The rear view mirror fell off on the drive home. The oil pressure gauge is pinned to the max at all times.

Body
Some positives are that it comes with a good unblemished (but red) passenger fender off the same car that the hood came from. (And PS - he did a weak job with a spray can of primer when he put that hood on the car). The original hood also came with the car and actually might be a better one for me to use. It has a bit of a twist in it, but it also has the OEM paint. I'm planning to get a fourth fender - a good one from a parts guy in Portland. Then I will do whatever prep I can on the hood, two fenders, and two bumper covers - and have it all painted as needed before putting it back on the car. That will leave two or three small spots for un-denting and touch-up painting.

Timing Belt
If I'm going to drive this car at all, I obviously need to do the belt. It gets worse...

Trans or Torque tube - you tell me?
About 50 miles into the 75 mile ride home, I started hearing a nasty growling sound. It kept making the sound until I got home. With the windows down on the highway, it really didn't sound that loud. I wasn't really even sure if it was coming from my car or a truck or what until I got into town. Then it was very obviously a BAD sound - especially at the stop lights. I probably should have stopped and towed from there. But I didn't. Let's move on. Its coming from under the car. It does it in all gears including park and neutral. What do you think? Is this something everybody recognizes. I'm hoping you will say to check/flush/replace the fluid in the transaxle, but expecting you to say I need to replace my torque tube....

The Movie
Okay gang. I just jumped in and started it up so you can hear the sounds. Obviously I'm no Scorsesi with my phone-cam, but I think you get the idea. I started it and then held the phone under the car and shifted into a few of the gears. Here's the link... https://www.nmr.mgh.harvard.edu/faci.../11004/1/world

The tension warning light has a built in about 3 minute DELAY after you start the car before it throws a warning ....sounds like that was about how long it took for yours to come on...That means the belt MAY be falling off , that it took 3 minutes to come on does NOT MEAN IT WAS O K ! It also could just mean that the contact wire is broken

Kuwana, are you local to the Boston area? If so there is a great group of 928 owners in the area and some great resources that can help you with your new acquisition. Congrats on the new car and welcome!

BTW if you do drive the car at all with the belt needing replaced and the light on, drive very smoothly, the belt will not like snappy transitions in rpm's. And definitely get this fixed asap since a upset timing is catastrophic on a 32v motor.

Get your tools out, and make sure you have some room on the credit cards. Stock up on beer too.

p.s. I don't think any of us are going to luck into an S4 that is mechanically up to date for less than 10 grand.

Hey guys -

Did you listen to my sound file? Any diagnostic thoughts?

GW

PS - I was in Boston, but now I'm in Philly (south Jersey)

That sure sounds like torque tube and/or torque converter bearings. Plan on replacing both. A rebuilt tube will cost around $500 not including labor. There are resources on this board to help you replace the bearings yourself, which is labor intensive but a very inexpensive way to go.

I thought torque tube sounds come gradually. Shouldn't I have heard something during the first half of my drive home?
