Removing 928 Letters on Door Sill
Anyone have any good tricks for removing the clear letters from the door sill without removing the trim?
I hate to use anything sharp to lift them

What exactly do you want to accomplish? Separate the black and clear plastic for cleaning? Or do you just want to remove the whole door sill plastic assembly?
I'm not sure how the clear and black plastic are fused together, and if they can be detached without breaking anything.

Hmm I thought the numbers just sat in there, didn't realize they're part of the black trim.
I wanted to remove the plastic numbers to clean underneath (yeah I'm getting carried away with this concours prepping) and also make it easier to polish the numbers.
IIRC you can't remove the black trim without breaking the rivets and potentially damaging the trim.
Am I stuck?

From my '89 S4 - a single, rectangular piece of clear plastic with raised 928 numbering is attached to the back of the black portion of the door sill covers. It appears to be heat fitted into place. I don't think it would come off without breakage.

Not sure on removal, and if you are looking to keep stock appearance then this would not help. But if you want a little different look, take a look at this. Carl at 928Motorsports offers this:

To remove the door sill plates, you have to push-in the little pin inside the rivet. Then you can remove the rivet, and subsequently remove the door sill piece.
Very often, other plastic fasterners break in the process, so you should have a supply of them handy, plus replacement rivets with the center piece you lost inside your shark's body cavities...

I clean under the pastic by lifting it slightly an shoving a thin damp cloth under. You could probably squirt some soapy water under the plastic and blow it out with compressed air.

Hey Bill,
I did something similar this evening although I won't know if it worked until I get it in the sunlight tomorrow. If it looks good I'll leave it alone but if it shows dirt then I have to try removal.
Next show is coming up in two weeks so I have some time.

Hi Rick,
Unfortunately I won't be going for this one. My oil pan is leak seems to be getting worse and I have two leaky power steering hoses. Easy fixes but if I take the oil pan off I'm doing the motor mounts and a couple of other WYAIT's. I also need to get a clear bra for the front, rockers and fenders, want this to remain a show car but also driver friendly.
There are a couple of other local shows coming up in the next few weeks including one on the Cape and also one at Larz, maybe we can get a group of sharks their?

Afshin,
I have had several dark colored cars (black), and the clear numbers don't really show very well with them. I've inserted a small piece of brushed aluminum under the clear 928 numbers, makes it much more visible and attractive (to my eye).
