Default Weird Gauge issue

It is an 82 5-speed.....

So I was on a conference call on my way into work and I ended up sitting in the parking lot while the call finished. Of course I was getting bored so I started pushing buttons and turning *****....

With the ignition off and key removed the fuel gauge would bounce between empty and 1/4 with each flash of the emergency flashers. If I turned the parking or regular lights on the needle would also go to 1/4. Do I have an electrical failure in my future? Does anyone else have this issue? I hate to jynx myself but everything with exception to the cruise control works.

on an embarrassing note my leaking headgasket turned out to be a leaking water cross-over, bad oil filler gasket and a car that hadn't gone on a long road trip in 6 months. All of that added up to coolant loss, higher operating temps, and chocolate milk oil. It has been 1 month ~400 miles with extended trips the needle only goes to the second mark if I'm in stop and go traffic with a/c and it is hot outside. It has yet to top the 2nd mark or go into the hot zone I'm glad my brother talked me into fixing the top end leaks before doing an engine R&R.

Paul, just went out and checked on my '82. Harzard only affect the turn signals. No other needle bounces. I check the lights, no go with ignition off, nada.

When in operation, car on, and a load on system - radio, high a/c, lights, etc. I will see some movement on needles at idle, not at higher rpms.

Maybe Alan will chime in with some help.

After giving some thought to this and seeing that no one else has responded. It could be your ignition switch is malfunctioning. Did you try and put the key in, not turn it on and giggle it to see if this changed the needle movement?

Good luck.

Found the problem. I had replaced the blinker relay with a cheap Kragen one. I ordered a new one replaced it and the problem has gone away.

Rule #1 of 928 ownership: Kragen is a place to buy fluids for the car, bulbs, WD-40, carb cleaner, and some of your detailing supplies. All else is suspect IMHO.
