Default Can't Do It Anymore... 1987 928 S4 5sp for sale

Well, folks, it has been a great half a year, but several thousand dollars into repairs, the car is barely in better shape than the day I got it. Sure the passenger window now works, but the sunroof just blew a bolt; sure I got the water leak from the door fixed and finally passed SMOG, but the trip meter stopped working; Yeah, I put in a new air filter and straps to keep the box lid shut down tight, but now the car won't START...

SO, I'm out of money and nearly out of patience and I think I have to sell. Here are the details:

1987 928 S4 with at least 110,000+ miles, 5 speed (the shift bushings and such were all replaced when I got the car, so it shifts nicely, or, rather, it shifts well for a 928).

It has the coveted folding wing, and I think it may have the squirter block engine, but most of you would likely be able to tell better than I.

Black with the burgundy interior. The exterior of the car is in great shape, but the interior is pretty beat -- cracks in the pod and dash cap, rips in the front seats, and most of the vinyl is a bit warped. The interior lights don't work, but the dash lights do. The A/C blows, but not cold, and the radio works, but most of the speakers are toast.

There are a few pics here: http://picasaweb.google.com/LCMilste...ey=kdD9c9O2RVo
But I know you'll want more. I'll add to it.

If there is someone local (San Diego) interested in the car who can come see it and decide, that's probably ideal.

I'm asking $10,000.

I bought it in November for a decent price and spent an extra $1,000 shipping it out here. Have paid the taxes to bring it into California and just got it registered in the state (passed smog and such). I've spent a couple thousand in parts from the big 3, a few thousand in repairs from AJ USA, and LOTs of my own time trying to get things in order. I have all the receipts from parts and repairs, so you can check it out. You might be able to find a better specimen for $10k, but I'm also betting that someone with a bit more skills and knowledge won't have all the problems I'm having and can turn this into such a specimen easily. It was a GREAT driver until it wouldn't start today.

Please PM me to inquire further and we'll talk.

BTW, I am a "member," so I believe I'm allowed to post sales in the general 928 forum, but if not, please move or kill the thread; I don't have the heart to get yelled at today. Thanks.

Dude, I am ready to sell mine everyday for the headaches and never ending problems. Try getting it running and drive it as much as possible and do a long trip also. If then you still want out, there you go.
Stop aiming for perfection and just get it running. Look at it as an antique that is lucky to still be on the road...

Few thousand to fix airbox straps and windows sure sucks! May i suggest never going to that shop again!

I also wouldnt exactly call the folding wing "coveted". Funny all you folding wing guys make it out like its ultra rare and thus desirable. Like how the 89 GT guys think its better then the 90+ because it has a mechanical LSD and not the vastly superior PSD.

All kidding aside its a nice price, good luck with the sale.

So, re the encouragement, thank you. I've actually been at this point a few times since acquiring the car, and driving it for 2 days usually fixes that. This is the first time the car wouldn't start up though, and that's pretty dispiriting...

Re the fixes, I've actually done a lot to it (either on my own or through the local 928 mechanic). All fixes, include:
- Replaced rack & Pinion system;
- replaced left rear outer CV boot;
- replaced shift coupler and linkage;
- new rear brakes;
- adjusted parking brake assembly;
- 4 new tires, balanced, aligned, etc.;
- new wiper blades (yeah, sounds like nothing, but took me a good while to figure out how to do it on this car);
- Fixed rear wiper that wouldn't move;
- installed new hatch and hood struts;
- Replaced spark plugs;
- Restored functionality to passenger window;
- replaced fuel sender;
- fixed odometer;
- replaced many interior trim parts and many screws that were missing on receipt;
- cleaned interior screws showing signs of age (by hand -- shoulda bought new one);
- replaced air intake tubes;
- replaced seals around both doors;
- replaced the splash shield in front passenger wheel well;
- Added front license plate bracket (don't worry, no holes drilled);
- installed new (properly fitting) battery; and
- a few other random acts.

Trust me, it was several thousand worth of work.

Personally, I think 6 months of ownership is way to short to call it quits.

If you are really going to part with it, at least get it running again.

If not running, I'll give you 2 grand for it after I spend 3 grand putting a new turbo on my Peterbilt this week.....

i read your post-you are not having good luck with your 928. i used to have an 89 928 5 speed-i kept it for about a year and a half and sold it-it depreciated like a rock. i am just writing this to ask you guys a question-i have had various 911s and they were/are very reliable cars-as you know, there are tons of earlier model 911s that are driven without problem. i do know from reading your bulletin board that 928's are very difficult to maintain. what is basically the problem-were these very complex cars that were poorly designed? what do you guys think is the reason that this porsche has become a money pit for so many owners?

good luck with the sale, altho if you are advertising to a broader audience, I'd focus more on the positves - by the time I was done reading your first post, I was wondering how much you were going to give me to take it off your hands ....anyway, it's probably some small thing like a relay that is causing your no start, or when you put the new straps on the air box, you knocked off a plug to the MAf or something...try to hang with it - see this thread - https://rennlist.com/forums/928-forum/426235-why-do-i-still-love-these-cars.html I had just dumped $$$ into it and bang, starter died. Long story short, it's fixed, running just fine, and headed to SITM in 2 weeks - driving cures all ills with these things...

Ok, this really isn't helpful. I know, and you know, it is likely a small fix that someone with experience could take care of. Not running was the nail in the coffin, not something I expect will dramatically reduce the sale value. I believe I'm offering a fair price for the car, and was hoping a Rennlister would be interested. I will continue to work to restore it while I have it, but I can't afford this car. Someone can ****** it up and bring it to life. Let's focus on that.

I'll start a new thread to ask about the MAF, etc. to see if it is an fix I can figure out.

Thank you.

911s until recently were pretty simple cars. 928s are complex. And the parts are expensive. Many have been neglected and have lots of deferred maintenance. The neglected ones get sold for cheap, and purchased by people who don't know what they're getting in to. This car may be worth $10k, but if the interior's all fouled up, the car doesn't run, the AC doesn't work, the vacuum pods are probably toast, it would be another $10k to bring it up to snuff.

I have a Speedster replica built on top of a shortened VW bug pan. It's reliable too.
