Default Ideas on painting my OZ Racing rims for the Strosek.

Getting ready for SITM. I'm looking for suggestions on painting my rims. They are OZ Racing Futura rims which were an option with the Strosek kit. I have four gold hood emblems and gaskets which I'm going to drill the center plate and mount, a center round disk is missing from the photo but would be painted the same as the centers.

The car is black, thinking of painting them
1. all black, may not look so dated.
2. centers black including the bolts (bolts are not SS and do not look that great, they rust) rest polished.
3. same as 2 but silver centers.

What do you think?

Thanks,
Glenn

paint just the star black, that will leave them with the nice dish and hide the very dated center spoke section

all black will look cheap, just paint the center section, the gold crests in the center may look a bit to kitsch too, i would have second thoughts about that too. Polished rim, black center and gold emblem in the middle is a bit much if you ask me.

Ben,
I like the look, did you remove the centers or mask everything? I've been afraid to take the wheels apart and then back together, don't want a balance or leak issue.
My bolts are steel and don't look very good, thats why I was going to paint them also.

Thanks,
Glenn

I was a bit of a cheat and just masked off the areas I wanted to paint. I will in the future strip down the wheels and repolish the rim halves and repaint the centres, but to be honest, they still look fine!

My bolts were all rusty and that area of the rim half was very corroded when I got the wheels, so instead of polishing that area, I used a mounted brass wire brush to clean up the bad section and bolts, and I used a high metallic silver paint to spray that part of the wheels. You can just make it out in the photo, between about 11 and 3 o'clock, it appears slightly yellow. Looks fine to the naked eye though.
The rest of the lips were polished as normal.

The bolts can be replaced without splitting the wheels, just change out one bolt at a time.

Cheers,
Ben

Glenn,

I changed my mind. I paint the centers aluminum to contrast with the polished rims.

If its supposed to be an 80's strosek car, then it should have 80's wheels i guess. Seeing the rim with a tire shows the scale of the center section which i think is just too small. I now suggest silver or aluminum. They look pretty good in your current avatar.

Glenn, split them and paint the star only Black with clear. I am doing this with the Riva's on my car.

Part of the problem is that between the bolts and on that lip is the original clear coat and I won't be able to get that off without pulling the rims apart. I've spent a ton of hours just trying to clean up the rims and get the lips polished. I'm sure they are over 10 years old.

It would be nice to clear coat the wheels. Fine steel wool and polish does work pretty well.

Below is a picture of the same body kit with black centers. At one point they offered an 18" wheel in the same style, mine are 17".

Thanks,
Glenn

the front of the 928 looks like a 944. Is it me or does anyone else notice a strong resemblence. I never thought the two cars looked much alike, but with that body kit you can see the similarities.

Ernest,
I thought about the gray/charcoal also, does look pretty good. Could you do that in black?

Ray,
the front fenders on the 928 are rounded.

+1 on the black centers, they look badass on that red car, even better on a black one.
