Hi Dan.....I too am a tube head. Never built one but have owned many through the years. As of now I have a Almarro integrated 18 watt single ended triode amp, Cain & Cain Abby's, a REL sub, VPI Scott TT and a vintage Scott 350C Tube tuner. Into vinyl as well.

Funny that you guys are talking about vintage tubed amps...
1 hour ago, while feeding my vintage JBL addiction, I noticed that the guy selling me my new beautifully preserved pair of L19's had some old amps sitting there as well.
Knowing nothing about old amps, I expressed interest in an old Pioneer SX-1000td. He practically gave it to me. It's heavy, and I think I can see tubes in it....but I'm not sure. (He also had a Luxman and a Dual turntable that I didn't buy.)
I'm guessing that old Luxman's are all good...but do you know anything about this Pioneer?
(I'd say that this post is OT, but the thread is "Odd Hobbies")

JP....The Pioneer SX-1000td I don't think is a tubed unit. I have read that the 1000 series Pioneers had a very nice tuner section and they do appear to have a loyal following. I would give it a shot and see how it sounds with your L19's......sounds like a nice rig.

Jazz Trumpet-majored in school and played pro for years.
Wine-my current job.
R/C Off-Road Buggies-actually lead to the 928. Figured it was time to get an adult toy (although i still like the little ones).

I like skydiving, but I don't get to jump too often. Although I'm still a novice I've jumped in several countries including the US. One of my favorite dropzones is Titusville, FL, and I'll be back there in late August. I've also arranged to go jumping in Elsinore near San Diago in February. So if anyone would like to meet up and take me for a spin in their 928, please let me know.

One my recent trip to the Nurburgring I realised that driving the 928 at the Ring was far far more intimidating that jumping out of a plane...

Dean, that's a nice looking set up. I've read and seen so much about the Cain and Cains on the internet. I bet it sounds real nice!

My hat is off to you sir!
I thought the 501st was the last of the original clone units that that lasted through the Clone Wars and were converted to Stormtroopers after the Emperor had to start conscription to fill out the ranks after the unfortunate incident where the 501st was sent in to destroy the clone center on Kamino when new batches rebelled.

Sorry, Star Wars Continuity is a hobby of mine (sometimes a maddening one).

Seriously, I think the 501st is so well known now that people have begun writing them into the expanded universe stuff like books. For example in SW Battlefront II if you play the campaign it's with the 501st. Very cool!

Your always welcomed to stop by. This set up plays intimate music very well. I would not recommend them for hard rock or rap....which I don't listen too. Jazz, Blues Chamber music is great. I mainly listen to Diana Krall, Norah Jones, Miles Davis, Jack Johnson....Sinatra, Martin...

Is that a 300B amp your building?

Dean,

LOVE that VPI Scout (you said Scott, but I am pretty sure you meant Scout) TT! I want a SUPER SCOUT someday. I have a Rega P2 with an RB300 and Exact. Not a common set up, you don't usually see high end Exact carts on the P2's. I like it...

I go back and forth in my audiophile hobby. It is always there but sometimes I am doing other stuff...

Best,
James

Hi James...yes your right...I meant to say Scout...Mine has the 300 rpm motor (biggest improvement IMHO ) , SS clamp and I'm running a Benz wood body H2 on it. I had a VPI SDS but really couldn't justify the cost over sound inprovment...very little in my case. The Superscout would be nice but what you have is a very good tt as is.

Have to chime in here (so to speak...) - been an audiophile since I built (from scratch) a 6L6 push-pull amp as a high school electronics project (this would be the year Sputnik was launched ). Then got lucky and bought, in '67, the McIntosh setup I still have today. Have added a CD player and upgraded to a B&O turntable (with a good cartridge) on which I play mostly jazz in the same category as above, classical guitar and chamber music. One son is a great musician (mostly jazz) and he got me into building electric basses (hobby content!) which led me into tuning my timing belt (Porsche content!) using the Jageng method (SFSG).

This has been a GREAT thread- really entertaining to see how diverse everyone's interests are. THanks all for keeping it going!

Sailed, but not in that class! My last boat was a Finnish square meter class boat from the 30's - believe it or not, a "Requin" (French for shark- ergo my sig). (Shark, if not Porsche, content...) And I taught a few classes, too- Russian Literature and Sales Management. Raced bikes, too, but not very well (Brit stuff, back in the day), but had fun. Your field(s)?
