Default AT Trans Failure

Have less than 8k miles on rebuilt trans, TT and custom Torque Converter.

Noticed a slight vibration at 110mph or so (on the track, of course), sometimes, but not always. could have been the surface I guess.

only change recently was a brake booster check valve that was leaking forever apparently. seemed to shift fine, all gears worked flawlessly.

Until yesterday. I pulled into PCA tech inspection, revved it a bit (ok to 5k to make a racket and watch the chicks jump, hehehe).. then through the routine checks. went to drive it away and no go.

no noises. no leaks. no clunks on shifting. pressure seems ok as the res. fluid goes down a bit when running, level is fine/so it seems like it's pumping something.

fluid looks perfect, no metal. TC seems to be spinning ok. and no tampons or lipstick tubes stuck anyplace strange, that I could find.

I don't think a blown modulator or broken bowden cable would totally kill it. my guess is the TC splines or the planetary gears? seems kinda odd given the level of preventive maint. done here. maybe we've hit the wall on what these can handle w/torque...

any one else got a good guess to toss out or thing to check?

works everything just fine... even shifted it from underneath while idling... no joy.

tires seem to rotate a bit in neutral at idle on the lift... but 1 hand can easily stop them.

Check wsm 38-113. Possible torque converter or pump problem.

I'm hoping it's the torque converter. Much easier to fix. Sounds like the pump is working if the fluid level drops.

Have you ruled out the torque tube shaft?

Could also be a snapped torque tube shaft.

Check the inspection holes at the front and the rear.

If the converter is spinning and he has park the tt should be ok. Hopefully it's just a lubricating ring or shift valve. Check the wsm.

No go in forward gears, how about reverse?

If you have reverse gear then B2 Piston failure.

I no go in any gear then another problem.

Is torque converter rotating?

thx for the offer H!! you are always too kind!!

the shop pulled the trans today, TC looks ok. TT is also fine, still looks new. also the TC would spin fine during the run test on the lift but no go in any gear...

guess it's either planetary gears or pump or as Zeus noted hopefully just a valve or seal?? wish it was the TC, Bill

I'm wondering/hoping it just blew a marginal seal when I did my stupid rev stunt... wouldn't be the 1st time being an *** in front of a woman cost me.... ha!

Hopefully it's not something major Rob, but if so it may be time to ship it off to Steve C to have it AMG'd.
