DOH.......... Always disconnect the battery before working on your 928 electrical system. Does the other car have the same brain as yours maybe you can swap it.
Did you try the spray that Bill suggested?

Uh Oh... that is not good... when did the big pop & spark happen?
This is actually a good way to melt the wires behind the CE panel - but you'd probably know you did something bad...?
so ....DON'T EVER DO THIS...
You will need to check the major connections... is your alarm disabled?
Alan

Hi Doc,
Please clarify.
Do you mean when you turn key to start position the engine
will catch and fire.
But when you release the key to the 'run' position the engine dies?
My 88 did that once. Thought I was looking a big hole in the wallet.
Then a very wide gent on the email list suggested I check the connection to the 2 'amplifiers' at the front of the engine bay.
The 2 round button under the finned cover by the hood latch.
Popped the cover off and put some contact cleaner on the op-amps and the connectors.
Fixed the no run problem.
Radio shack used to carry the DeOxit cleaning pens.
They only have this now: DeOxit Spray
Did you coat the paint can tool tip with insulation?
Think the insulation dipping stuff works.

I would say swap in a friend's LH and see if it runs then. If not, at least you are fairly certain your LH is good.
Also put the suspect LH in another car and see if that one fails to run (hope the gremlin doesn't hatch a ride to the other car!).

Well first idea would be to check the alarm works normally... open window, lock car car, reach in twist unlock ****... alarm should sound - unlock door - alarm should disarm - silence - if it works you should be disarmed - try again to start...?
Otherwise check the voltages on pins B23 & F25 on the bottom of the Central Electric Panel (just probe into the backs of the connectors) they should both be ~12v with the ignition on...? if they are not and B23 is ~12v and F25 is 0V - link the two together and try to start the car that way.
Dave - I would always suggest moving the failing LH to the friends car first - if it doesn't run you have a pretty good idea of the fault, a non-functional LH has a low risk of damaging a car... Moving the good LH to the car that won't run has a higher risk that some other fault might damage this LH... not good for the friendship...

That DeOxit is good stuff. They've raised the price from $10 to $15 for the two can set. Just a few weeks ago, I accidentally spilled some coffee on my lap top keyboard. After napkins, upside down drying with a hairdryer & waiting a day, several keys were sticking. The DeOxit cleaner took care of that really quick. So far, no other repercussions. I just wish they made it in a bigger can, but then I probably couldn't afford it. I wish I could offer some intelligent help Doc, I know you'll figure it out though, you're a really sharp guy & meticulous when you work on your sharks.

Ed,
In the first post you said, "the car will turn over and fire". If it fires, why won't it run?
Did you try giving the throttle a little push?
I had an '86 that wouldn't run. It was towed to me and I found an extra relay in the panel that shorted the crankshaft speed sensor. Check the relay chart to make sure that you don't have an extra relay for your model type. As I recall the car was a 5 speed with an automatic relay plugged in.

Clarification:the car turns over but it doesn't start/run, if the fuel pump is jumped there is a cylinder that fires, but no fuel is being injected. Neither the FP relay nor the LH relay are being sent signal. I sprayed Quick Start into all the intakes and the car started and ran till it exhausted the fuel. The alarm system works correctly. I visually check the whole harness. All the relays are where they should be, and no extras.

OK, if it runs briefly on starter fluid, your injectors are not firing, and this happens despite jumpering all the relays and swapping brains. SO, did you try bypassing the alarm?

On my car, I just found the solution! The mechanic that I had take the car to, had put a relay into the "Kickdown" spot. SInce it's a 5 speed, this appearantly turned the car into a brick!
