Putting in the wrong relay or in the wrong place is usually a bad thing.......

I think on the later models (85+) the relay slot labelling on the CE Panel is quite confusing and often Relays get replace into the wrong sockets. This has happened a lot. The labels wrt the slot change sides down the board and you have to pay attention to the little (too little) arrows to see which direction the label applies to... That is my guess here too... Its always worse when you take all the relays out and leave it for a while before reassembling as here...

I suggest always taking good pictures of the CE Panel before you take stuff off - its easier to compare to this to see that it also still looks right when you re-assemble.

The kickdown relay is also a different style than the rest. I'm trying to figure out what was shorted together.

Looks like kickdown XVII is fed by

N23 pin 30
XVII 85 (itself?) Pin 31
N25, pin A
M11, W11, pin 31B
XV15, S24, pin 15
T23, pin 87o

When you flop a standard relay in there, who knows, but I'll make a guess.

The kickdown relay momentarily interrupts the cps to lessen the shock of the motor during a downshift be shorting it to ground or changing up the timing. When installed in a 5 speed car, some other configuration plug that enables that function isn't set up right, so cps ends up at ground or botched the whole time.

Since I'm at work I can't study the diagrams any closer!! Haha. Glad it starts.

I looked anyway. That relay is hooked to W11, the same blue/wt wire I had to unplug from the harness on my car to get it to run. It goes to pin1 of the LH and carries a cps signal!!

Holy cow do I have this same problem??? Damn I want to go home and check right now!!

I'd better also fire myself. I have the same problem Matt has, but my car ran because I unplugged W11 from the CEL.

I must have flopped a normal relay in the kickdown position (in my case, XV, be careful there are changes year to year, XV and XVII swap between ABS and kickdown somewhere in there!!) while troubleshooting a few years back. I had a short in the O2 sensor wiring and tested everything before I found it. I must have left this relay behind!

When removed and plugging W11 back in, I now have a functioning TACH!
