What function do the caps provide? I don't have them on my SCer, but then my manifold is different too. (O-rings I understand.)

I assume the cap popped off and the plug wires fell out and somebody guessed where they went. The wires actually looked very neatly arranged as if correct, but they weren't. Judging by the injectors, broken injector clips taped together and incorrect bolts in several places, a hack worked on the car.

They are called protective caps. It appears they mostly just hold the seals on the injector.

17mm O rings will be a VERY tight fit.....all of the O rings I measured on my 928 were between 16.4-16.6mm and they fit quite snug...

its a good idea to lube the O rings i like to use the Dow Corning 111 non setting silicone sealant , it makes for easy removal and keeps the rubber soft

Bill,

I don't know about the 4-hole injectors, but the "disk injectors" we installed in my car didn't have
"protective caps". So I don't think the caps are necessary to keep the o-rings on.

They are with the Bosche injectors. The lower o-ring and spacer just fall off the injector if the pintle cap is removed.

The O ring dimensions emulate those in the standard Bosch kit.
You measured your O rings at circa 16.5mm - were these new O rings or old?
Would the extra 20 thou make that much of a difference?

Whoever installed the injectors should receive a big fat bill of the extra work they caused.

Clarification: A fat invoice, not a fat Bill.

The ones I measured were OLD...well not that old, but they were 4 years & 14k miles old...... But I thought the O rings swell with age.....or is it the other way around and they shrink?

I was just interested and you may be right that they swell. I do not know if Viton swells or not. I do know that it is very compatible with gas. Maybe someone else can comment?

We gotter fixed today. New idle stabilizer, fixed vacuum leaks, fixed bad injector plugs. SMOOTH IDLE. The owner says it has never run this good. We had a few mishaps along the way and crunched a few injested pintle caps, but it runs very well now.
