Soooo heres the update:
My total bill is $850. Thats for a alternator, fuel relay pump, and the Winning Solution.....(drum roll please) a New Oxilery wire from the battery.
Mr Guesswork states, the celenoids engaged, then disengaged, when he had no injector pulse he kept looking for a bad connection on a hard/hot wire. Finally he checked the oxilery lead.
He is charging me two hours for that task alone, considering my bill was early 700's a few days ago.
Lesson learned thanks to you guys
Now I have to come up with the money, test the old alternator and ask the simple question, does this all make sense, minus the alternator, or should I be debating the rest of the charges?

I'd get your car and old alternator back first then have the alternator tested. If it's good I call the shop and ask them if they will put it back on and return the alternator you did not need. It's a lot easier for us to second guess from the sidelines but electrical problems can be very difficult for most of us.

Finally picked up my car today! YAY
Heres how it went: I got a bill for a new alternator.$450 Fuel Relay $39 & Oxilery wire 2 hours
Looking over the bill I stated "Id like to grab my old alternator as well"
Mechanic, "Ohhh well, we used that as a trade for this one"
Me, "thought I paid for a new one?"
Me again, "Oh so did I get a $100 for trading it in (thats what I remembered reading on here)"
Him, "Ohhh yea I think the alternator was 550, we Only charged 450."
I paid 825 when all is said & done.
Now I have no piece to go get tested to see if I even needed any of this.
And to top it off....Mr Guesswork stated my power steering was leaking, causing the alternator to go bad...He said he fix it. Upon pick up today, he said if I dont get it fixed soon, my alternator will go bad again
any thoughts? Should I stop my check, and show him a quote from 928 int, that my alterator cost 350, according to Jim???

IMHO if the "bill" does not show cost of new alternator AND the credit for your old one as a core then there is something sinister going on. Has to be a record of the complete transaction.

First of all find a new mechanic since this one isn't being forthcoming. Regarding the leak, technically you want to find out ASAP where the leak is coming from. A few sources include the hoses at the drivers side below the reservoir and the other is usually the steering rack. Did he tell you were the leak is? The Rack can dampen the alternator cooling duct and cause dirt buildup. This dirt can eventually break down the duct and reduce the cooling effects to the alternator.

Does the bill of work show 'Alternator' or 'New Alternator'.
There's a big difference there.

If they buy the parts there is always a mark up. Sometimes a large mark up other times a small one. Depends on the shop. The core should have been given when the new alternator was purchased. I think this could be chalked up to a lesson that will help you every time you have work done to your car in the future. My lesson was much larger when I bought my 81 928 off ebay. I paid 4K for it and with all the things wrong with it including undrivable due to severe over heating it was actually only worth maybe 2k at best. After shipping and airfare it totaled about 5600.00. My mistake was much worse but actually the same scenario. We both got into something we really new nothing about mine was just more expensive. Count yourself lucky and do your own work like most people on the list or find a dependable mechanic with references from the list. Jason
