Default Newbie in NYC area needs help (need cam placement tool - rv)

Hey I got a newbie question for you guys, I"m currently in the process of putting the heads back on the S4(my first time), and was wondering, are there any suppliers that still rent the cam placement gauges/ alignment tools?

Just in case a rental cannot be found, is there anybody in or near the Queens or Long Island areas, that has the tools and is willing to swing by and lend a hand. I am of course willing to pay for lunch, gas/tolls, and rental fees as needed.

I have a couple of projects underway with the car(suspension,exhaust,wp&tb,etc...) and am starting to feel slightly overwhelmed so any help/guidance/advice or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Im trying to get her back together in time for SITM, which would be my first time attending so that way I get a chance to meet some of you guys and your sharks.

Thanks to all who answer.

I have the PorKen 32V Cam tool. I just got it from a group buy. http://www.liftbars.com/ It is not used yet. Don't have experience using it. I never taken 928 head off. I did do a head gasket job on my wife's Sentra. You can borrow it if you want.

I know the feeling. IIRC John Kelly?? Search. He has a great manual w/pics on TB R&R for about $18.00, great peace of mind. These two sites are invaluable:

Welcome to the asylum! I'm in Manhattan and could make it out there if you need some help. My garage and tools, however, are upstate a bit.

I don't think the Porken timing tool will help if the heads have been off. I think in this case, I think you need to use a gauge to measure the valve lifts per the WSM.

I was thinking dial gauge too. I go near you on weekends to LI, but my schedule is crazy for next couple weeks. When you are cleaned up, there is a bunch of car nuts including sharks that meet at Oak Beach. We also had a shark dyno day near Port Jeff last fall, that could happen again. Good Luck.

Default 928'er nearby

Hey-

I live nearby (Fresh Meadows) and have a new-to-me S4. I used to have an 82 but it was killed in that flood last August. I do all of my own work but it sounds like you've done more than I have, at least on the engine (on my 82 I did the TB/WP, suspension, rack, brakes + misc).

Nope. I used Ken's tool (version 2) to set the cams after replacing a head. His tool is much easier than messing around with a dial indicator.

Hey Dave, are you saying all I need is just the porken tool to set the cams? How vital is the placement guage tools? Or can one get by with just the 113 mm measurement across the cam bosses
