Default Bill Ball, "I Love You, Man!", (Also Theo Jenniskens & Louis Ott)

Gotta give kudos to these guys & 928 owners in general. I've got a pretty nice 90GT & have been completely baffled by an idle problem that would occasionally cause my car to die while idling, fluctuate, & generally run like crap while sitting still.

I have had my intake off 3 times in the last year- replaced all rubber & sensors (except the crank sensor- just found a new one on Ebay for $19.95!!!) This last time I figured out the problem- there is a plastic tube which sticks out near the top of the oil filler neck & attaches to a rubber hose which runs to the bottom of the intake. This tube was broken from inside the oil filler neck causing a vacuum leak. I fixed the broken tube with some black RTV & now my car is idling perfect.

The reason I'm posting is to give public thanks to:

Louie Ott- He sent me (2) LH's & a rebuilt MAF to try in my car. This was at no cost to me. He also installed my LH in his car to see how it ran. This was all done over the phone, through email & USPS without having met him in person.

Bill Ball- He loaned me both the Spanner by John Speake & Theo Jenniskens 928 diagnostic tools. Again, I have never met Bill in person & have only emailed him in private.

Theo Jenniskens- We emailed back & forth many times trying to figure the problem with my car & how the diagnostic readings we got with his tool related to the idle.

I also just finished installing Bilstein/Eibachs on all 4 corners as well as new drilled/slotted rotors & pads. Sure, I could use my WSM for these jobs, bit it's much easier with the info, experience & pics available here on this forum.

Glad to hear you found it. After months of working on similar problems with another local lister, his is fixed as well. Severe pinging proved to be due to carbon build-up, and a very high, somewhat rough idle was finally tracked down to a rebuilt but out of spec MAF. All is good again.

keep an eye on the RTV it may start leaking againg as the oil might degrade it.
I would suggest that you clean the connection wuith acetone and use some JB weld on the oil fill tube connection, this will be a fix for life. Goodluck that your cars running well

Brian,
thanks for the nice words. Appreciate that. I'm glad things worked out for you and as I often say: if it isn't caused by something complicated, it is probably something simple that has been staring you in the face all along ...
kind regards,

I am a little confused on which tube you are speaking. Could you be a little more specific?

David,
on the oil filler neck of a 928s4 there's a tube that enters just below the Yellow cap on the right side of the filler. It is a hard plastic pipe and that became loose. The rubber breather hose is connected to that plastic pipe. Phenomena is not uncommon. If it gets loose, air enters the filler, increasing "false unmetered air" in the engine and thus increase the idle RPM. It also creates an erratic idle rpm behavior, unstable so to say. Typically slowly creeping up to about 1200rpm.

Yep JB weld is the way to fix this part.
RTV will leak over time, since its exposed to oil

Hmm, mine is very loose. After my intake job, I had a nice 800 rpm idle, but only when cold. It slowly climbs up to 1200 rpm as the engine gets up to temp.

off to buy JB Weld.....

Very cool. This is easily the best forum I've been on, and I've belonged to a lot. When I found this forum, I knew I would be good to go with getting a 928.
