S4 32V P&P headers X pipe hi-flow cats need muffler advice
Hey whats up guys. I need advice/input for a intermeadiate or rear muffler configuration on a project motor I am building.
So far the 87S4 32v heads have been ported and polished with larger intake and exhaust valves. The valves have a 5 way angle job on them. I already purchased Devek level II headers and Devek X pipe, with random technology stainless dual Hi-flow cats. The size of the dual cats are 2.5 OD.
I have been checking the best sounding exhaust note post, and the archives for clues on what you guys are using, but have not found somebody with exact set up as mine.
I am still relatively young so the sound in terms of loudness is not that big of an issue as rate of flow/quality of the mufflers.
Any input on the borla xr-1 especially would be greatly appreciated.
Dual mufflers? or single muffler with dual in and out ?
P.S. Autothority chips or sharktune to maximize engine performance? only problem with the latter is that I'm not familiar with the system or know anybody as yet in the NYC area with it.
Thanks for all your help with this matter. Will most likely post addtionally for help putting motor back together

Do you have the larger S4 resonators or the smaller GT ones? Or are you running any at all.

Sterling do you have Xpipe on your car? If so how did you route for single exhaust?
I spoke to Mr. Ott last year regarding headers; Xpipe; and cats. I purchased said items last year and have not put them on the cars due to head work being performed.
I was leaning to purchasing the twin borlas today but felt I should get as much info as I can on them. I was thinking of twin intermeadiate placement of mufflers with a rmb.

I have Devek Level II headers into dual high flow cats (that are currently hollow) into a single 3.5 inch pipe with 1 Borla XR1 and 1 regular Borla (don't recall the model offhand). Sound is sweet, right on the edge of too loud, but definitely ok to live with. I actually like the sound better with cats, it's cuts the sound just enough. Are you planning dual or single pipe?

It was going to be dual but you guys are convincing me otherwise with your set up
Rich did you hear your set up with only one muffler before you added the second.?
Was it too loud and your reason for adding the other muffler?
Thanks

When I first got the car it had the high flow cats with both mufflers. Sound was perfect for me. Then the ceramic elements in the cats broke apart and some of blew out, some of it rattled around until I cleaned it all out. Since then, its a slight bit louder, I'd call it rougher. It absolutely barks when started up, wakes up the wife and rattles the house. But it soon settles down, and I actually think the sound softens just a bit when fully warmed up.
You also have to consider the resonance/dronning. This isn't a problem with my current set-up. But on my other car (16 valve), with an Ott x-pipe, no cats, and the same 2 Borlas, the sound was UNBEARABLE. At freeway cruising speed you couldn't talk to the person sitting next to you. There would be a window from 60-80mph that sucked, then a sweet spot up to 100mph, then sucked until 120mph, then sweet again. The resonance was so bad, I took off the x-pipe, added stock S-4 cats, and the sound was then perfect thru every speed range.
Hope this helps.
