My '83 is currently OTR awaiting time and funds to do some "stuff." This driveway ornament has my wife fuming. She wants it GONE. The argument that "I have too much invested in it and I will never get out of it what I put into it" doesn't cut it.

Every time the subject of money comes up, that car in the driveway "just sitting there" inevitably comes up.

And, of course, I spend way too much time "chatting with my internet friends" (Rennlist), and on eBay.

But, a boy has to have a hobby...

I am just thankful that the Shark is registered in my name only!

BELIEVE ME!!!!!!!!!!!!!

A 928 is SUBSTANTIALLY cheaper than a new wife.

And a new wife is SUBSTANTIALLY cheaper than getting rid of the old one.

However, no one is suggesting you actually replace the "rev-limiter", It is just eliminating it may be the only path to a 928.

Greg,
I like your dream event. Why did your girl get upset, because you didn't mention that she was in the car with you!

My wife being a nurse, will not have the thought of me having a bike because of the sever accidents that she has had to deal with in the ER. In the early 80's I wanted a 911. Almost got a great deal on a Ferrari while in Italy. But then in 85 I my friend took me for my first shark ride and that was all it took, I wanted a shark. Years passed and I found a great deal on a 911, (Not finding the shark that I wanted) and my wife loved it. It became her 20th anniversary gift. While it was in the shop one day, I showed my wife a 928 that was in for work and she saw the spark in my eye that the bit wound was still deep. The next year, she searched and found a 5-spd shark and bought it for my birthday. She won't ride in it while I’m racing but outside of that she locks her 911 and jumps right in.

I think my rev-limiter goes high enough to keep me from blowing a valve.

Ell

Hows this,

http://groups.msn.com/thediygang/shoebox.msnw?action=ShowPhoto&PhotoID=55

No problem

If some people have a rev-limiter for a wife, mine must be nitrous.
We have been together for 19 years married for 8 and we both really dig these cars.
I bought her a Maxima as a daily and she hates it. She wants to drive the 928 but we have to share now don't we.
The only time she gets bummed out is when I spend 7-10 hours on a Sunday working on the thing. Since I have a 4 and a 7 year old boy, I totally see her point. Gonna try to keep the projects to a minimum this year......I hope

Cheers

I had an 83 944 for many years. When I wanted to upgrade to a newer 944 before the birth of our first child, my wife said no, "Get one of those other ones". After going through my photo books and agreeing that we could not afford a spyder, she fingered the 928. "That's the one" she said.
A few months later I inherited a 90 944 red convertible. Drove all three for a few months, sold the 83 944 and drove the other two all summer (944 - fun below the speed limit, 928 - fun above). The time came to sell one, limited garage space and winter is coming. I was unsure but she wasn't. "Sell the 944 convertible".
She loves that 928 - seldom drives it but loves to ride and be seen in it.
Finding the right women the first time is the best strategy.

Well, I was seeing this girl for a while (not long as you'll see why) and never got to dating status, as she said I was too classy for her. I about fell over laughing after the shock wore off... Don't get me wrong, she was definately attractive and cool. So, heres the 'rev limiter' part:
Whenever I'd be driving and take a turn, she'd get upset and scared and brace the dash. Hated me taking corners. Strike 1. I was driving down the hill thats right by my house, and I accelerate to about 50 or so, and she exclames, I dont know what the speed limit is, but I'm pretty sure its not that!. Strike 2. Now, this is the worst part... Not for the fain of heart... We went to a football game and on the way back in the parking lot, I'm walking to the car, and she stops and says, "Isn't that you car?" That whats when I look at the car shes pointing at, and my jaw drops... She pointed to a Chrysler 300m!!!!!!!!!! "I drive a Porsche, thats a Chrysler!", said I. "Well its blue..." she responded. Oh man, this girl is NOT a car person I thought to myself, among other things... Strike 3. Now, she was drinking the Hatorade like no ones business when I drove. But I gotta laugh, she turned out to be a different person than the one I met. Oh well, her loss I say! I guess thats not a Hates My Car story, but a good one nonetheless. Every time I dropped her off I would nail it on this onramp by her house, which turned out to be the best part in seeing her... But now I'm single again and the only rev limiter I have is my LH Jetronic.

Jeeze, I MUST have finally done something right! According to the "warrantee" issues, "first marriage" fiasco's, and "rev limiter" theories, etc., I have bypassed (?) these stages!!! (....? )

Married to my first one, closing in on 19 years now, SHE came and got me AND the three bikes I had at the time, bought me a '55 BSA Gold Star for the first anniversary, sent me on my way ALONE, to go pick up my inherited '56 356A, hasn't minded (...MUCH!!!) the other 24 bikes I've since picked up, finds out about my wistful wish of having a 928, early in '01, and in May, '01, buys our Cassisrot 928 (Reference the 27th post, from "GoRideSnow", in the "Pics of my car" topic), and TELLS me to keep her up to speck! ( I did tell her I did not want a black, red, white, or silver 928. I like the way many of these colored cars look, [ESPECIALLY the one named "The Great White"] but heat retention, dirt exhibition, and care problems, made me look at other colors. AND the way these colors seem to scream at police; "Come and catch me!!!")

As far as the "rev limiter" schtick, I'd have to say that would more likely be me. I grew up damned POOR! Letting money go frivolously has never been anywhere close to me. My wif has higher expectations than I do, but she also had hard times. As a team, we work well. We bounce purchases off each other, apply common sense as much as possible, look at finances and the want/need equation, then when we decide to buy something, it will be the best we can afford. Longevity is a factor in MOST purchases.

951 Badger, I think your topic has been mostly hijacked! Not many of the "Worst "wife hates my Porsche"" stories appearing..... A good topic though!

Ted928's last statement pretty well says it all!

Yes this thread has been Hijacked. Totally.

I have said this before. My wife Clare came AFTER the Porsche. Well, one of them. The contract involves unconditional love through bad and good, sickness and health....

And at least two Porsches at any given time.

Sometimes three. Currently, she gets here own 928 auto (81), but I drive it more than here. I find, however, that I hear alot of "I pass this tosser on the road tonight, you should have seen me....I hit that kick down and ZOOM"

I don't drink, no drugs that I know of, no pilandering, and no bar fights. I have one VICE/Hobbie/time consumer all rolled into one - the cars.
Sometimes she gets a bit fed up. We have a three month old boy. Time is short. I put down the wrench and do the family thing.

Seriously though, its quite concerning/unpleasant to find so many divorced men here. I guess if it gets that bad...

I use 'rev-limiter' as a term of endearment for my wife. She's got lots of common sense, mechanically inclined (I buy her power tools for gifts), and rides shotgun in cars, boats, motorcycles, and loves it. Right up to about a buck twenty on the BRP over a rise with a slight right kink... "Honey... that's enough". She's gotta draw the line somewhere, I guess.

She actually pointed out that I own 3 of these pigs and they don't have as much value combined as her Suburban. She says I need that many just so I'll have one to drive. She's pretty funny sometimes.

I wouldn't be here except for the divorce. Porsche seemed like a perfect exclamation point for the end of our rocky marriage, 928 was my dream since the late 70s. Lest anyone waste any sympathy, I clearly got the deal of the century - she took a boatload of bucks and half the furniture, remarried 3 months later, but I bought my 928 and got custody of my beautiful 3yr old son. And put in a garage heater, life is good.

Question

Gordon,
The awful truth is the old wife will take the old 928 and sell it cheap just to cause more pain.
SO...
You would then be in the market for a new wife AND a new shark, or, a new wife with a Barn Full of sHARKs.
P.S. Wouldn't hurt if she had a set of manuals and rote memorized the electricals.

Man, this is a depressing thread! Having to make a choice between wife/family and car?

I'm on my fifth Porsche, if you count two 'hybrids' that enjoyed Porsche power. First 928. Married only six months, and had the car when we met. A condition of the marriage is the space to enjoy my hobby, so she's been actively participating in the garage expansion at the new house.

As far as "rev limiter", she hangs on when we do a few quick turns, and tells friends "I know he wouldn't do anything that would endanger the car." Self-preservation and the concern for her safety are highest on my list, or we'd be driving those twisties in a Lotus rolling lightbulb. We don't do any high-speed stuff anymore, at least not much above the 80-90 open-road speed limit every once in a while, so no complaints there. She's been known to drive her Two-Runner at 85, so 90 in the 928 is very tame.

I suspect that a beater pickup or that old orange Mazda station wagon would have scared her off, but I've always managed to have at least one interesting car in the stable. She's aware of this and knows it's part of the package.

I plan to rack up the same number of married years that some of you speak about. At this point the critical factor with the toys will be time spent working on them rather than budget issues. Fortunately, I can adjust the driving time in them so there's always enough time to keep them nice. Cars are a lot more patient than wives when something needs attention.

Happy new year to all, stay safe and stay happy!

Actually my wife is very supportive of my p-car habit now. It was a matter of funding.

Right now I'm working on getting another Porsche in addition to the 951 (hopefully either a 993 or a 928GT). Just gotta pay the 951 off first.

By the way...can anyone give me some money!!??

It's always nice to have a great wife AND a great car!
