Mystery option codes

Adrian-

My understanding was that my car was purchased from a dealer in Germany in June, 1985, and imported to the United States with only 12 km showing on the odometer. It was federalized, or converted to meet US laws by a group called Mala GMBH, which had an office in Miami. The VIN code is WP0ZZZ92ZFS841526, and this is located on a plate on the driver's side "A" pillar and under the hood. The only option code is "C11", which someone online told me means something about the tires, but they (and I...) might be wrong! If you know anything about this code, or where I might find out what it means...let me know.

This one has an interesting history; It's first owner drove it for 8 years (again...so I'm told) and then committed suicide in it by driving into his garage, closing the door, and never shutting off the engine. The neighbor found him the next day apparently. The car passed through two owners, neither of which cared for it, and I chanced upon it one day in less than excellent shape. Needless to say, the car has it's first true OWNER....

Dear Normy,
I can tell you 100% that C11 is a country code. I promise and guarantee, this has absolutely nothing to do with tyres. When my book on the 964 is released there is an entire Appendix devoted purely to option codes and paint codes. I have a nice long list of the country codes but not C11. This 928 was obviously destined for export but was not sold or whatever reason remained in Germany and sold onto the USA. Maybe C11 is Austria or France. I have never got any feedback from Porsche owners in either country. Sad really seeing Austria is only 250 metres from my office.

C02 Rest of USA Version

C07 Italy
C10 Switzerland
C16 UK
C18 UK

PS: I will try and check but it may be possible that C11 is German Domestic version with factory alarm. Does your 928 have a factory alarm. Switzerland had C10 for with alarms and C72 without. How do I know, I live in Switzerland and own two Porsches, a 911C4 with C10 and a 944 with C72.

Dear Colin,
My book is about the 964 series only I am afraid. Mine you the 928 does get a mention because of the later models ABD system. The 964 uses the same rear differential lock and same principle of operation. The 928 also gets a mention in the DME section as well because it had special country and variant jumper plugs which were used on the 964s. Seat rails also, if one has a 964 with sports seats. Central locking etc etc. Many parts of my book could easily be translated over to the 928s, especially the later models. At least in system descriptions and troubleshooting.

Thanx Adrian!

My car does indeed have the troublesome factory alarm system. Since replacing a door lock cylinder, I have had all sorts of problems getting the cylinders adjusted correctly...Sometimes the door locks will not disarm the system and I wind up with the horn blaring, the lights flashing..... I just use the valet key now!

Hah! Yeah, I had the same problem with my alarm. See, without option codes, I didn't know my car had an alarm. One day I unlocked it but the key sort of slipped back without fully unlocking the door. Or so I thought. But the locks themselves unlocked. Ok, says I, I guess I unlocked it. I open the door and HONK! HONK! HONK! HONK! I almost jumped out of my skin. So now I'm wondering to myself how the !!#$%@ you turn it off. I shut the door and locked it, and it shut off. Everyone in the parking lot at this point is looking over like "who's the cool guy?". Needless to say, I'm careful about unlocking the car now.

I have seen pictures of build stickers in Euro versions of other Porsches - a 930 comes to mind. And it had option codes. I think the whole thing with the ROW (ZZZ) VIN and option codes started in MY 1980? So the '78 and '79 probably don't have them. But it's interesting that there's another Euro 928 with only the one option code - Normy's C11. So the question becomes "why don't some cars, so far only Euro model 928s, have any option codes listed aside from the country code?"

FWIW, my Euro 944 (an '88) has option codes like any other Porsche.

Via a trip yesterday to D'Ieteren Porsche in Brussels.... I discovered that "C11" is for Austria.

-I was just sniffing around and came across this thread from over a year ago. Does anyone know what the association between country code and alarm is? How is the alarm different from country to country?

Cars for Switzerland have a continuous beep rather than on/off/on/off.
