It must be love...
I've known about the Carrera GT for some time but I never paid too much attention to it. I saw it again this morning in an article covering the Geneva Motor Show and decided to take a closer look.
Aw my God!!!!
This car is totally awesome!! If you haven't yet, check it out on the www.porsche.com website. There is a lot of information but you need to read it all to understand what a truely exceptional vehicle the Carrera GT is.
I love my 928 but if I ever have $400,000 burning a hole in my pocket...

Flint, I don't see your point.
The 911 is still a rear engined, backward, stuck in the past car. Just like the 956 before it. Yes the engine, transmittion, and suspension is basicly all new, but that don't change the fact that the car is still not layed out properly for optimum desing.
Now, the 928, and 924/944/968 family, well thats a diffrent story.
The 914 is also a diffrent story.
But I digress. ;-)
Can't wait to see Porsche shoehorn a modifyed version of the new V-8 into a 928 like car. :-D

I think rear wheel drive is Porsche philosophy, unlikely to change especially where racing cars are concerned. The 911 Turbo is 4x4 but the GT2 is 2x4, for example.
Whatever the case may be, I'm sure it's one hell of a ride!

This may not be well received but .... how was the GT1 configured? Could anything touch that car, which was sold and driven on the street, and ultimately penalized by being forced to compete with restrictors in the intakes.

I think most of Porsche's über-cars are ugly. The Carrera GT falls into that category. Too many holes and openings. I like the smoother shapes of the 928 and the 996 non-turbo.
The Carrera GT is a mid-engine rear-drive layout, just like a proper racing car.
It has a full carbon fiber monocoque and rear sub frame. The suspension is double-wishbone with rocker actuated coil-overs, again, like a proper racing car.
There is a thread in the General Porsche Discussion forum with some excellent photos:

Take a look, you'll be impressed.

Hang in there Reinhardt, in a couple of years they'll be down to a mere $300K, and that is when you make your move. Of course by that time, gas prices will be over $10 per gallon.
You know, Morgan, I never even thought of it that way...Since we're on the subject of supercars... has anyone seen the Bugatti Veyron?
$1000,000
400+ Km/h 0-300 in less than 14 seconds
736kW 1,250Nm of torque 8L W16 (2xV8) Turbo
AND...
It's one of the ugliest beasts Volkswagen have ever created.
At a mere 400K the Carrera GT is a steal!

That's pretty darn cool.
Rear wheel drive is the future. With all the new computerized acceleration, braking, cornering assist, etc. car designs are going back to rear wheel layout without the handling problems of yesterday.
The problems are what I like about driving...
That Bugatti is pretty sweet too...

dunno, I think the Bugatti Veyron is probably the sexiest car I've seen with the possible exception of the snout-like front grill. I absolutely love how the door & roof line just meld into the back end.
Of course, 1001 bhp & 922 ft/lbs of torque are kinda nice too.
Don't get me wrong, the Carrera GT is nice too, but lacks in the same area that the Veyron succeeds. What the heck happened behind the rear window? It looks like they forgot to finish. And what's with those two humps? There's no engine components that require them. THe only thing I can think of is that they're fuel tanks...
