Question Yamabond When? Loctite 574 When?

Yamabond When? Loctite 574 When?

The technical description of loctite 574 describes it as a flange sealant, used as a form-in-place gasket for gearbox and engine casings. Sounds simillar to yamabond.

I have both. What application would require yamabond and which loctite574?

Currently, I am in the middle of a t-belt/ tensioner / water pump, etc. job. I will also be doing other work on the car and thought that the yamabond would be for gaskets and sealing and the loctite for thread applicatiions. Now I'm not so sure.

Thanks in advance,
Greg

Yamabond - used for the oil pan gasket with great results.

The Locktite 574 is used when re-installing the Cam Covers on 85+ models.

The gasket surfaces for the water pump are designed as such to not require the use of any kind of sealer.

Be sure to chase all ot the water pump bolt holes prior to putting the engine back together. Also, use the 'blue' locktite for sealing the bolts that pass thru the channel next to the water pump impellar. Use anti-sieze on the rest of the bolts.

You might even consider replacing all of the bolts associated with the water pump (be sure to use 8.8 rated fasteners).

Question

Jay:
Can you add a bit to this previous description?
I'm looking at my newly painted cam covers and the gaskets, and the sparkplug tunnel seals. Are you saying 574 on the flat surface of whole seal, or just at the corners? On the flat part of the sparkplug tunnel seals? <img border="0" alt="[ouch]" title="" src="graemlins/c.gif" />

Brian-

The Locktite 574 completes the seal in the transistion area between the head gasket surface and where the cam cover end plates meet the heads.

My local parts store do not carry the 574 sealer. Where can I find it? Also can I used yamabond for the tensioner bolt?

Hold on fellas
The 574 is used to seal between the cam caps ( these hold the cams to the head in a 32 Valve car)and the head.
Note scrape off the old sealant with a fresh razor blade held perpendicular to the surface. It will be a white powder.

The Hondabond is used at the junction of the head/cam cap so the rubber cam cover gasket wont leak at this junction. Just a small dab is all that needed.
If the cam covers are not smooth in the gasket groove then a small bead of Hondabond in the groove should assist in sealing the gasket to the cam cover

The 574 sealant is also used to reseal the girdle to the block to maintain the oil in the oil pickup passages and prevent oil from seeping past the faces.

In the picture posted look at the lower sealing edge next to the air sample tube the white sealant is the original Porsche sealant this is where the Honda bond would be used in all 4 corners of the caphead junction, this is after you have sealed the cap to the head with the 574 sealant

The 574 is a bit hard to find. You might need to mail order it. Your Favorite 928 Supplier should have it.

I just use regular blue Loctite on the tensioner arm bolt. Holds it in and seals it up.

for the waterpump you should always use new bolts ACE hardware has them in the correct sizes also i use Blue RTV sealant on the waterpump gasket and Loctite PTFE # 592 non setting pipe sealant on the WP bolts so they wont corrode in the block ( this keeps seeping coolant from entering the bolt holes)

Jeannie can get it or you can get it through Fastenall.

As far as Yamabond, I prefer Hylomar, but other folks seem to love it.

With regards to the 574,
according to the manual you do not need to remove the old 574.
But I did anyways

A couple of years. If you ask 928I or 928S I'll bet they've got it on hand
