The seats look terrible.
The tools, as Bill so eloquently said....
Not to mention someone on here said that this seller has blatantly misrepresented cars before and went as far as to verbally abuse the buyer post sale. I found this in the "can someone take a look at a car in dallas thread" just today.
I would proceed with caution with this guy, sounds like a huge headache!

I'm with you guys.
1. Dark coolant reservoir (darker than mine at 70K)
2. Belly Pan appears to have been cleaned as there's dirt in the corner recesses.
3. "Front rack replaced"
4. Seats
And, what's w/ the hoses draped over the radiator I wonder - unlike mine?
These are details that would have me passing over it unless I could make arrangements to visit it in person prior to a bid.
Curious, I've got a '90 so my mileage is indicated on the electronic readout. However, is it relatively easy to dial back the mileage on the earlier cars w/ mechanical digit readouts?

I actually think the mechanical one would take more effort to fudge but could probably be accomplished by a larger group of people.

Drifting
With the proper tools present I can have the speedometer out of 928 and ready to be rolled back in about 40 minutes. Motor vehicle laws vary from state to state so I ran a carfax on this one to see what it said.
The car was bought new 9/88.
8/94 it says title or registration issued. Mileage 1196.
6/95 titlw or registration issued. Mileage 2335. This strikes me as odd because for the first 6 years the owner only put on 1196 miles and then in 10 months, proceeded to double that mileage. It makes me wonder if there was a transfer in ownership here because it seems weird that the owner would change his/her driving habits so drastically and also because registration everywhere are usually one year at a minimum. I would surmise the vehicle did change hands at this time.
10/97 Registration issued or renewed
Title or registration issued
Loan or lien reported
Exempt from odometer reporting
Passed safety inspection
This is strange because it says both registration issued and renewed, and title or registration issued. There's a lot of info here to clearly indicate that the car changed owners at this point. I'm wondering why the vehicle was declared exempt from odometer reporting?
5/98 It's entered as "dealer inventory, vehicle offered for sale." The mileage was 3930. Sounds to me like the person who bought the car 10/97 either couldn't keep up with the payments or had some issue with the car. There is no entry of the car being sold or a new title/registration at this around this time. 5/98 we were still in the tech boom and this car would have sold practically in a matter of hours and yet there isn't another entry until 1/02.
1/02 This entry was made by a service facility and the mileage was 11,168. The entry says "vehicle serviced, engine serviced, miscellaneous service performed.
8/2006 No mileage is listed and it says "registration updated when owner moved the vehicle to a new location."
The current ad states that has 11,171 miles. That means it has been driven 3 miles in the past 6 years. Strange, but not impossible. Also, it went 9 years without an entry for registration/title. I know some stuff gets missed but something doesn't sit right. Also, I don't know the law in Texas, but in Maryland, you don't report the mileage when you renew your tags. Unless you have to report mileage in Texas, I'm inclined to believe that when it says "title or registration issued" and they list mileage, then the car changed hands. I think this car has had 4 or 5 owners and it's only been moved 3 miles in the past 6 years. The odometer gears fail not from wear, but from the lubricant that breaks down the plastic the gear is made from. I think it is more a function of time rather then use. I would suspect this car has a bad odometer gear so there is probably a discrepancy.
There seems to be minimal maintenance history on the car which is odd because the ****-retentive types who buy these undriven garage queens make a notation in the maintenance log if they so much as fart while sitting in the car.
Like everyone else I am perplexed by the seat covers. It could be a low mileage car but probably one that was not properly stored. I'm wondering if there timing belt and rack replacement were done when it was serviced in '02. If that's the case, then we know it's due for another timing belt and probably many other hoses and gaskets that fail from lack of use.

I'm not kidding about this guy. After I returned the car, he said some very rude things to my wife, and also suggested that he would put the car out on the street with the keys in it. When we called the AGs office, we were the second people to complain about JF in three weeks. The other complaint was about a Ferrari 308 I believe.
As for the busting his *** part, I live in NY, not the Rockies. I settled for a refund because I wanted my money back immediately, not because he deserved to get off. The car was worth a little less then half the purchase price BTW, and the full front suspension rebuild consisted of new tie rod ends, bad ball joints, and a sway bar that was snapped in half. Tip of the iceberg there.
I have purchased a lot of cars long distance. This was by far the worst. I'm not saying that you couldn't get a good car from Jeff, I'm just saying it would be up to you to make sure that it was as represented. Seriously, Caveat Emptor. The guy would sell out his own mother.
Run away.

By comparison, I still have an AutoCheck account, and the only odometer reading it shows is 2335 in '95. The only other events listed are the lien in '97 and yearly registrations in TX from '95 to '07.
