Default Hello/Looking at an 1980 Euro

Hello everyone. I have been lurking on this site for a little while now trying ot gather as much information as I could about these wonderful cars. I am going to look at a 1980 Euro 5 speed tomorrow and had a few questions. The current owner says it runs well and is cosmetically in good shape. He has no recoerds however and has not done the timing belt/water pump yet. He says that he has done some maintenance totaling around $2,000 for which he does have records. Mileage is around 84,000. He is asking $6,000, is that reasonable or should I go lower? Also how can I tell by the vin if it's a real Euro? Thanks in advance and I will post pic's after my visit. By the way this is one of the most knowledgabel and friendly sites I have ever seen

Wolf we really need pics to give you an educated guess. I've seen junkers that should be parted out described in better terms. Oh wait I bought that junker for 4K. I had no clue when I joined the shark club. The old saying the car is worth what you can sell it for is really true with the 928. Jason

It could be a Euro BUT NOT an S , no S no real magic !! Also note that if the car was federalized and the speedometer odometer converted to miles the actual odometer is unknown. Vin number and engine number would tell a lot about the car.

Get the VIN and some pics and post them here. You would be surprised how much info these guys can give you with that alone. include pics of the engine bay and interior/dash. The engine number is on top in front under some hoses.

It is good to check what engine number is NOW in the car since many Euro S engines have been replaced with USA blocks / engines over the years.

Hello again. I just returned from seeing the car. I did not take pictures as I forgot my camera at home (I have an 11 month old son so getting out the door can be pretty hectic). Here's the skinny from what I could tell. The body is straight and the paint is in pretty good shape-some swirls and scratches but very nice for its age. The interior was also pretty nice with no tears in the seats. The dash had some cracks and the passenger side door panel wasn't secured. All the electrical worked and the car started and idled smoothly (What a wonderful sound!) The rear hatch is broken and the a/c needs a charge. It seems like a good starting point as I will be looking at as many as I can before I make my decision. I am looking for an old body style in the price range of $3-$7,000. I definitely want a manual. I would also like the car to be drive able so I can enjoy it while I fix whatever is needed. If anyone has or knows of a car that meets my guidelines please let me know. Fabio, I believe you are selling a car that caught my attention not too long ago. Is it still available? Details if it is. Sorry for the long post. By the way, the seller of the car I looked at todAy says he knows Jim from 928 Int'l. The sellers name is Steve and his shop is in Newark, N.J.. Thanks again for all your input.

If it helps, I work in Newark and would be willing to look at the car with/for you - just let me know.

A co-worker of mine (944 turbo and Boxster owner) mentioned to me this past week that he saw a black 928 for sale in Newark on the way home the night before. Is the Euro you're looking at black?

Adam, yes it is black. It's in Newark right off of Bloomfield Ave. I live in West Orange so it's not far at all. The problem is that the seller lives in Livingston and he leaves the car at the shop. It's taken me 1.5 weeks to see the car because he normally only shows it Monday through Friday from 8-5. But if you wouldn't mind checking it out I'd rally appreciate it.

Thank,
Chris

With a nice body, interior and working electrical thats a big +++. But the "a/c needs a charge" is $2500 off the top immediately. Figuring it's a solid car with everything working is $6-7k. Take off the a/c and offer $3500. If the body, interior and electric is *really* nice, start from $8-9k and take off the a/c money. Also make very sure you have the federalization papers.

Hi Chris,

In order to see the car on your behalf, do I have to make an appointment with either the car owner or the shop? Send me a PM with the particulars and I'll check the car out for you during the day.
Let me know,
Adam
