Mark- I do like the car but I think he wants too much for it. He has no service records but said he put $2000 into the fuel system. The timing belt/water pump are of unknown condition. He also recommended going through the brakes if I buy it. Are all Euro cars rated at 300HP or only the EuroS?

Get the VIN of the car - assuming the engine/block is original, that'll tell you which engine it is reliably.

Only the Euro S is the 300+ hp model.. with the 4.7L engine. The Euro 4.5L non-S 928 is basically the same as the US 4.5L.. uses K-jet instead of CIS, but only a marginal hp difference.

as I, and others have said earlier, the engine block stamping number is the only sure way of knowing what block you have. casting numbers for the heads and intake tubes are other ways to check, but you still have to go back to step one , which is confirm the block stamping numbers. Cam numbers are only accessible by removing the cams from the cam towers (unlikely, but possible...)
Block stamping numbers as follows, both manual trans and slushboxes:
M28/09 and 10 are the 4.5L 229hp Euro's
M28/11 and 12 are the 4.7L 300hp Euro's
In 28 years since production, the complete engine may have been changed out for something else, as well as just the heads, cams, intakes, or throttle body, or any combination of these parts. nothing is certain unless you confirm the numbers yourself.
Should this car (the one you are looking at) be the one for you, and it needs parts (brakes as you wrote), I have parts for it.
Hope this helps in your quest.

Only the Euro-S had the 300HP, the standard non-S cars had 229HP, only 9HP more than US cars of that time. (edit: I see these guys already beat me to the punch here)
Here is some other useful data from 928 Specialists website showing vehicle type, engine numbers and performance by year. An '80 5-speed would be either engine number M28/09 (non-S) or M28/11 (300HP S). If it is M28/13 then it is a U.S. motor. One way to determine if it is a Euro/ROW car is if the VIN starts with WPOZZZ, US cars do not have the ZZZ in the VIN.

Thanks Chris and everyone else for that matter. I have found a couple of others that I will be looking at as well. I'll keep you posted and hopefully I will remember my camera this time.
