Default Windshield replacement + or -

And before someone says "search" - I have.....
Has anyone found a method to succesfully fill all the little pits in the windshield yet, or is replacement the only real option? I'm tired of looking at them and don't think just closing my eyes is a good option.

You could try polishing the glass. Kits go for about $60. It takes about an hour.

The instructions probably tell you this but if you polish too agressively, you can overheat the glass and cause it to crack. Some detail shops do this work.

Have you talked to your insurance? Some companies will cover pitting if you tell them it is dangerous and affecting visibility. Might be worth asking at least.

I've also heard that the polishing kits are only strong enough to remove wiper scratches caused by sand on the windsheild.

Do a quick search on sharktoberfest windshield special, and get the phone number for our local glass shop that did a bulk deal for us. When we closed up Sharktoberfest, they still offered some that they had optioned at some of the local distribution places around the country. Michelle will tell you what you need to do, whch is something like find a local glass guy who will install it for you. She can have it shipped to your guy. These are genuine Sigla OEM glass, not the Chinese ones that have a poor rep due to waves and distortion. Green band and tint, no antenna wires in the glass. Price was excellent, and she allowed $100 IIRC for those that arranged ther own installation. Read that whole thread and you'll get the idea.

From http://www.carinsurance.com/kb/content12892.aspx

"Broken windshields are typically covered under the comprehensive coverage portion of a car insurance policy. Some states allow for the normal deductible to be waived for windshield replacements. Florida is one of these states, according to FL Statue 627.7288 the deductible shall not apply to windshield damages."

Don't know if this helps.

If you get stuck I have 10 new ones - Sigla - in stock. They are Green Tint as the Brown tint is NLA at the moment unless I order direct from Porsche.

Buy a new windshield and save yourself the 60 bucks because after you buy the polishing kit you will be buying a windshield anyway.
Went down this road last summer with my Jag.

Matt

Insurance.....

Sorry - I can't help myself......
We are speaking of my $1,000 and $300 dollar 928's here.
I did source out domestic glass for a darn good price. Since I am trying to get all the 928's headed for the paint booth I figured I'd replace the windshields on the Euro's. For less then the cost of 2 polishing kits you can replace the glass.
Thanks guys, I didn't realize Pinkirton glass was so cheap in quantity.
I think it is probably the shipping that breaks the deal

Mike,
Care to share where you are finding windshields as they are unobtainium at the moment.
You can get plenty of quotes but once you try and move forward they do not exist.
Best,
Roger
