Post steering wheel extension

I understood there was a steering wheel extension kit to be had which would (permanently) extend out the steering wheel from the dash. Anyone have any experience with this? My dash pod moves up and down on the'89 GT, but the wheel does not extend in or out, and is therefore too short for me based on where the pedals are and resulting chosen seat position.

Porsche used to offer two steering wheel options - regular and extended hub. The extended hub was about 1 inch longer. It was not adjustable. The only way to switch between the two was to buy a different steering wheel.

My first 928 - an '88S4 - came with the extended hub. I could barely touch the turn signal switch with my hands on the wheel. So I replaced it with a used wheel with regular hub. When I sold it, I put the extended hub back on.

I'm not sure, if this was still available in '89, as Porsche changed some of the instruments that year.

Thanks, I always wondered about the increase in distance to the stalks. I often "bump" the wiper stalk accidently, so for my hands, the 1 inch extension may not be a problem. I am not sure it is worth the trouble if the only difference is 1 inch, especially if I have to change out the whole wheel......

Here is what the extension looked like before I replaced it on my 87.

Thumbs up

Gretch,

I added an aftermarket momo wheel. It is dished toward the driver and had the same effect as the extension on the flat stock wheel. I no longer run into the turnsignal stalk with my hand when turning. Here is a link to a photo of the wheel. I have the black one.

Jerry,

The extension looks like it is seperate from the steering wheel, is it? Or would I have to find a whole new steering wheel?

Jerry, one other thing. The aero mirror upgrade. Describe the procedd of removing the old mirrors and installing the new ones. is the paint under the old mirror bases a problem? <img src="graemlins/jumper.gif" border="0" alt="[jumper]" />

My 89 has the extended hub option. I do believe that the extension is PERMANENTLY attached to the steering wheel, and not the hub.

I do suppose that this same arrangement could be made with the momo and sparco wheels.

I am planning on replacing my steering wheel with an aftermarket unit. I will sell the steering wheel, but I think the timing is off if you need it now.

let me know when you remove it and what you want for it. Is it in good shape? I never thought the standard wheel was either good looking or very functional, but am reluctant to replace it. I have kept the car completely original for value sake.

I will admit to upgrading to 17" cup wheels, but still have the orignial 16" 89 GT wheels. Boy were they a pain to keep clean!

Gretch, it is one unit. This was another reason I changed to a Momo - the extended hub made the steering wheel just too far out for me.

Gretch -
I agree Whole-heartedly with the idea that these cars, when required, need tobe kept original. In the last 30k, though, I have decided that I will make thsi car what I have always wanted - MY CAR - as in making subtle, clean changes that will make it more enjoyable to me.

These original steering wheels are Fugly in my opinion. I never liked it, and its too bog for my tastes. By all means look at what momo has to offer - They make Club 3s and Club 4s that make an original looking addition to the interior.

FWIW, the steeirng wheel is in perfect condition. I have this habit or removing and selling perfectly good items off my car. Such as my seats (F/R), and rear center console. I then bought cobra seats, and will be covering them hwne I replace the tan carpet for a much more pleasant steel grey blue.

Anyway - ranting. I will see what 928intl charges, and let you know.
If you can at all think of it, I hope that you can rectify your dislike of the aftermarket wheels - some are very nice.

No, dont have the wheel. This is my first car that I have not kept 100% stock - so anything I replace is sold which has been quite a bit. Trying to keep up with Brendan

Responding to an earlier comment - my Momo did not lengthen the distance as compared to the extended hub.

I'm trying to keep up with you Jerry.

I am behind on your color-keyed rear wing.

I was looking at the bat-man looking wings from Jaquemond. I am undecided, but whatever I get, it has to be lighter!
