Scam.

I've received this one a few times about my Isaac for sale. Ask questions that are already answered in the ad.
First one was a guy who had a "shipping company".
Be careful out there.........

Seller,
I just read your listing and I am highly interested in its purchase. Well, you can signify your interest in selling the, item for me by thus forwarding the last asking price of the ITEM?.and more pictures of the item if available?,what is the method of your payment?, Please make sure I have your reply at your earliest conviniency.
Sincerely.

Per forma, English is not his native language. The "brother in the FBI" or Interpol replies just send them away, but you can have some fun with them like in the 419 scam baiter exploits. You might want to teach him a few new phrases to "correct" his poor English, ahem. This "educating" of the scammer can get pretty hilarious.

My brother is the crown prince of Brunei, and he rest assured me this is a legitimus transaction. My brother and me can facilitate this transactional accord for you for agreed sum of $25,000 US! Unfortunately my brother has until now only supplied my base funding with a $35,000 cashiers check. Since I am only unable to divide such baseline funding, I offer to you in whole such check to the extent that when the accord is compete you may keep any additional balance....

Andrew,

Your brother must be Leonard Odili!!! Got an email from him wanting to buy ceramic tile at $25.00 per SF. He backed off when I told him I will only ship on my freight line and use my customs broker. It's about the same scam on businesses except they use fraudulent credit cards. Takes about 2 weeks for the card to bounce.

This is definately a scam. The next thing is something aboyut the check has been cut and it was a mistake as it covers shipping cost too. Deposit in your account and send us the balance asap. Meanwhile they have the car and if you send the balance then they have your money too. Their check is no good.
Sorry to inform you but it is all a scam. They contacted me too and I had them checked out by good friend who also happens to be DA here.

The way the deal works is like this. Say the selling price of the car is $5K, they cut you a check for $20K. You give the shipper your car and $15K (from which they are supposed to take their cut and forward the balance to the buyer).

A few days later you find out that the check for $20K you deposited is no good.

You are now out your car AND the $15K you gave the shipper.

If you advertise anything of value on CL, you are bound to get a scam email for it.

If you happen to live under a rock you might not have heard that the same sort of scam is working pretty well as an apartment share scam. College kids hoping to share an apartment get a nice email from someone who wants in on the lease, the scammer sends a fake check for first/last/ securuty desposit. In in a day or two they write again saying there was a family tragedy or something and can you wire back the money? They can no longer share the apartment and now need the money for (a new goat, goiter operation, bribe, emergency contraception, etc.) They hope you have deposited the fake check and will wire real money back.

Pretty effective. Gets a lot of students that are trying to find roommates over the 'net (craigslist, etc.)
-Joel.
