S4 Tail Light Replacements NEEDED
1987 S4 Tail Lights needed.
I need to replace the wiring harnesses on the back on my tail lights.
Anybody have set they would sell? I would rather buy the complete tail light assembly if someone has them available in used excellent condition (no cracks front or back and no rusted bulb seats or cut wires).
I have the cash on hand now......
Sponsors welcome to send PM or reply here with a price on excellent used or new OEM.

David already has my price for the tail lights but also needs harnesses.
I can get them new but they are not cheap at $199.95.

Someone was just offering a pair of tail lamps with harness's i think on here. I think your 3-4 days late to this party.
Try the for sale section, but last i checked it was a really good price and they were gone pretty quickly. If you MUST have them now then you will unfortunately have to pay the must have it now rate. Otherwise wait it out will someone just gives them away.
Also finding used ones with no cracks at all is tough. I was actually really lucky to get one from Roger that was great, ive seen spider cracking on most of the originals so i'm not sure if you'll have much luck there.

i recall it being a pretty small and simple harness. You could duplicate it, but actually trying to find the appropriate ends could be impossible.
I imagine corrosion is the main issue being that anytime the car is washed there is a bunch of water that comes from behind the lights. I could see corrosion being a big issue to these harness's failing. What exactly corrodes, wires themselves of the holders for bulbs or the harness ends, who knows.

It's the plastic sockets. I think that if someone could come up with replacement sockets, the existing harnesses might be able to be saved. The PO of my car soldered the bulbs directly to the broken harness wires!

What fails is the metal parts within the sockets where the bulbs contacts. The thin metal corrodes and breaks, leaving the receptacle useless. Sometimes only one socket goes bad but the best way to fix is to replace the harness and taillight or replace the Harness and repair the taillight to keep water/condensation from infiltrating it.

It is indeed the contacts in the bulb seats that corrodes. My harness wires and plastic sockets are in very good condition. I temporiarly fixed them by folding aluminum foil into the size of the contact at the bottom of my sockets. Then inserted the bulb and let it crush down into a fairly good contact.
I missed an offer the other day for a set in excellent used condition without harnesses for $200. The used harnesses were priced at $100 each from 928Int. I thought 928sRus price was $495 with the harness, so I passed on the used set for $200 (plus the needed used harnesses for $200 for a $400 total).
Then realized the 928sRus price did not include harness. By that time the used set for $200 was gone.
Oh well.

I will ask my supplier, if he can duplicate the plastic sockets. However, I fear that he might not be able to do the metal contacts - and if, it would end up not much cheaper than the original harness.
But I'll ask anyway. He has suprised me before...

rusting contact in rear bulbs
The problem of rust is caused by moisture sitting inside of the lenses and inside of the light sockets. If you get them early enough, you can put some dielectric grease inside and save the socket from rust.Mine was totally gone and the contact pin at the base of the socket broke. So it was toast.I was able to find a replacement through NAPA auto parts for an early Nissan Quest harness for $10.The socket is the right diameter and depth to screw into the lense opening.I spliced into the wiring harness. It works perfect. The only other choice is to buy a new lense and harness for over $400.Don't ask me why Porsche,Audi,or VW doesn't make replacement light sockets. They would sell a lot of them if they did.Hope this helps.
