welcome...
What is your budget?
How skilled are you with restoring cars..?
What are your expectations, rebuild the motor, replace the interior, or do you just wantt to buffout the paint?
Craigslist is a good place to start, there are always for sale in most big cities.
My advice, get one with a really goog paint and interior, that way you have a good start...

I appreciate the help. I'm looking for a car that looks good (7 and up on a scale of 1-10). I have no qualms with small problems, however it must me mechanically sound and be able to pass inspection without any headaches. It will be mostly street driven, but also autocrossed and maybe run at Maxton for fun. The budget for the car is $4000-7000 max.

That's no project car!
Welcome aboard. My car was a project car, where's JHowell37s avatar? Now THAT'S a project car. You're in the right price range for a good runner if you can find someone to part with it (I think). Where are you located?

I'm happy you like the news I know guys have been asking for a 928 project for years. I like the offer, but I'm looking to buy one. That way I can drive it hard without any reservations.

Greg you might want to look up "Project 928" a series of just that for Excellence done about 15 Years ago by J. Kim Crumb the then PCA 928 tech resource.

Ah ..."solid street driven autocrosser." The automatic 1984 would be a poor choice for autocross. The 4.7 puts it in a higher classification and the tall rearend gears takes much away from the low speed acceleration plus the sunroof adds weight high on the car. It would be hard to find a worse candidate than 83-84 auto as a basis for a build. You would be racing against 78-83 911 SC cars weighing in at about 2750 lbs BUT you would have to weigh about 3350 lbs. And you would be running the same size wheels !!

Good point. I agree that a lower gear and 5-speed would be best at getting the engine to rev out of tight autocross corners. However, autocross is just one possible angles for the series. The basis is, of course, the process of locating a suitable car and then going over the details of getting the car in shape. In the case of the '84 auto, 1 early feature could be specifically on interior resto and dash replacement. There's also the possibility of a Speed Trial at Maxton or Bonneville in as well as at least east coast 928 event. Autocross is important, but I want to appeal to all 928 fans (resto, touring, racing).

Very interesting. I may have to start reading that fine publication again.
For street-legal high speed competition, I would point a 928 towards some Open Road Racing.
