Default 84 with Auto, reverse slow to engage

I have an 84 auto that takes several seconds to engage in reverse. Once engaged, reverse is sold (no slippage). Is this an adjustment (such as Bowden cable)? if not, does anyone have any thoughts?

The transmission seems fine except the delay in reverse engaging.

the delay is a safety feature, but you might want to check the fluid level just to be sure also check the vacuum line for continuity

That PDF only applies to 3speed transmissions, I will note that on that PDF, for MB and 928s, the cut off year is 1982. All Four speeds automatic use clutches (B3), for reverse engagement. The clutches are worn, it’s internal.

Steve i thought that you told me that the delay in the reverse gear being selected was a safety feature. I had posted this question a long time ago when i was restoring my car??? Of course its been a long time, but i thought thats what you said i had also replaced the B2 with the updated part. Sorry for posting the wrong info

My 83 3 speed is slow too, but my wrench says with shrug, Why worry? It may last a week, a month or 10 years like that. Been like this since I got it 7 years ago. Just DONT try to reverse it up a steep slope... something about reverse being ungoverned, and can do bad things if overloaded. Next time I have it high enough in the air I may do the adjustment I have documented somewhere.

Change your fluid and filter.......Mine was going crazy, slow and also slipping out of overdrive. Changed the filter and is was all good again. After I drove it a week on the new fluid, I had to add another quart but the car now shifts like its new again.

I don’t remember, and if I did say that, I was wrong.
The symptom would have been a delay into DRIVE if I recommended updating the B2 piston. The only transmission safety feature used on many models and brands is Engine Torque management; Timing is retarded under high load. Used in 1987 on 928s.

Presuming that was the only problem with the transmission, would you mind specifying the cost of repair?

Thank you.

B 2 piston failure will lead to reverse working normal and forward gears slipping. Ask me how I know. Roger has a picture of a thrashed B 2 I pulled out yesterday. Damn easy install though.

Thank you.

Pump seal, bushing, 0- ring and gasket. B3 piston seals, updated B3 Fictions, steels, Belleville plate and return springs.

Parts $189.92
Labor 2 Hrs X 85 = $170.00
Total $ 359.92
Shipping?

Any competent Transmission shop in your area can do this Job, I doubt they would know about the updated parts, if they use original frictions and steels, reverse should last for many years. Make sure the other items are changed, Pump seal, bushing, 0- ring and gasket. B3 piston seals.

A leaking B2 seal will also cause a delay engagement into drive.

My 90' S4 would slip in reverse while backing up a hill, but would also grab. So I thought it was unsafe to drive that way.

I repaired reverse myself. Here's a look at the decomposing reverse frictions which Steve said was typical of what he sees.

I used the opportunity of having the tranny removed from the car to do a complete overhaul, replacing all the seals and some burnt steels and and installing some new frictions. Otherwise the internals were in great shape.
