Default 951 Piston Rings ??

Hi,
I tried this on the 951 board but they either do not know or no one is home 8>)

The 951 Piston Ring Set is 951 103 901 02 is still available from Porsche at about $132 a piston set. This number does not superced to the 944 number at Porsche.
Goetze is the OEM I beleive and they are superceding that number to the more standard 944 103 902 82 (08-323300-00).
Do any of you know if they are the same parts or not.
Talked with Vertex and Pelican who are more 944/951 savvy and no one seems to know for sure. With Vertex if you order the 951 number they send you the 944 as it supercedes.
Is there a difference , and if so what should I be looking for?

If the 951 and 944 parts are the same there is a tremendous price advantage.
For our V8 thats $187 v $1056 big difference.

Thanks in advance for any help .
Roger

Rebuilt mine last winter, purchased the parts from Don at EBS Racing http://www.ebsracing.com/.

Part number 951 103 901 02 was a set of Goetze rings for FOUR pistons at $98.50.

There was an issue I had with a 944 p/n ring being sent which didn't look at all like any ring in the "951" set. That was soon corrected; it didn't appear to be a huge deal to get a real replacement "951" ring.

Hope this helps a little.

Well with a bit of help from Kirk @ Zims (good call Ed) we sorted out the correct 951 rings from the OEM.
I will follow up with pictures but we are 90% sure the Part Number we found is the 951 set.
Pretty important as the Porsche set is $1056 and the OEM set is $228.
I have one customer waiting - any one else in the boost club need 951 rings.
Thanks for your help.

Roger, I think that I will probably get a set of 951 rings off of you.

I guess I don't have enough experience to follow here, but I will ask anyways. Are the 944 rings the same as the 928? If so, what years? Then if I am following this correctly, since the 951 rings are the same as 944, then we can use the 951 rings in the 928 engine? Sorry, as you see by my posts, I am a noob.

The 944 has half a 928 engine in simple terms.
The rings for the later cars are available from the OEM under a 944 Pt No.
A lot cheaper that way. So on stock cars you can use the 944 number.
The 951 rings are better and more suited for boost and can be used in the 928.

Slight delay - the rings arrive Monday.
I am about 99% confident we are on the right track here.

This is good to know as I am looking to rebuilding a 4.5L 16V. The pistons are stock 95mm. Do you know off hand the PN for the 951 that would work in my situation?

Ouch. Uh, no, you will not be able to use the 100mm S4/5.0L 928/951 ring packs.

Your rings are, uh, EXPENSIVE, and in short supply.

Depending on where you can find your ring packs, you may want to look into getting some of those old-stock 95mm pistons that have been on ebay.

More than that, there are several engine, at least short blocks, that are for sale that would be cheaper than finding rings for the 95mm.

The 944 number quoted above is for the 5.0L engine so I think the answer is no.
IIRC the 944 were all 100mm pistons - I am sure someone else knows better than I.
