95mm rings are $132 a piston set x 8 = lots of money

IIRC the 944 were all 100mm pistons - I am sure someone else knows better than I.
I'm not sure about 944S, but 944S2 are larger rings. All the 2.5L 944/924S/951 are 100mm rings.

This is a really good excuse to move to a 5L with your 2V top end.

You mean a 32V block and reuse my heads? If so, how is the avaliability of these blocks and these the ones that the 951 rings fit into? Oh, what about mounting? I know the mounts will be different.

The cost of going to a 5.0 block for the simple reason of saving money on the 95mm rings, it's not cost effective.

Your best bet is to pick up a 4.7 liter lower end. Similar rings prices (to a 5.0)and much cheaper short blocks.

Good to know. Are 4.7 blocks easily available? What about the mounts? My 4.5 uses these mounts.

Its not that far off Erik. Find a 4.7L, find the bearings, find the rings (which are more expensive than the 951 rings as I recall), and cut the pistons if needed for the heads, and how far is that from a 5L?

Same bearings, last time I priced the rings they were very similar (couple of dollars difference).
You have to cut the pistons on an 85/86 with 16V heads, an S4 block will leave you with lower compression than stock.

All US 16V's use the same head - nothing to cut.

I've seen 4.7 liter engines sell for under $1,000 (short blocks much less). I'm not sure where you can find a 5.0 of any year that cheap.

The later mounts can be used if you get the later engine support member (I call it a K member). The mounts are cheaper, and it isolates better.

I thought some of the track guys switched to the early mounts?

They probably just started with earlier cars. The early mounts look much easier to work with for engine removal/install which would be nice on a track car.
