Post Will Euro motor fit into 82 Weissach?

I am wondering what kind of work and money would be involved to install a 4.5,4.7 Euro/Euro S motor into my 1982 Weissach.

Can it be done?...Yes
Can it be done easily/in-expensively?...No

I installed a 1984 Euro S motor in my 1980 928. It can be done if you have the complete wiring harness and computers for the new motor. LOTS of electrical issues to deal with. 84/85 Euro had LH fuel injection, not L fuel injection like your current motor. 80-83 Euro motors used CIS injection, again not similar to your L injection system. I can only speak from experience with the later Euro motors, not the early ones. You may have state smog issues to deal with as well, for example California requires DMV seal-of-approval when a different engine is installed.

So, if you can find a good Euro motor to buy, plan on re-sealing the motor at a minimum, change TB and water pump, any other belts/hoses/etc to replace, if you want to update to later style motor mounts you have to change the crossmember, if you have a 5 spd install a new clutch master cylinder while the motor is out, etc etc etc. The list is long and costly. Now add to that the time you think it will take multiplied by 5. Or 10. It will always take longer than you think and cost more than you budget.

But it can be done...I did it.

Tell you what, the better idea would be to get a 5 liter block, notch the pistons and put all the euro intake and heads on the 5 liter block, then just attach the US injection system right to the euro stuff . The merge point would be everything after the euro throttle body.

much easier than a euro conversion of the intake system, electrical, dual cap and rotor, etc.

Or, just stick the 4.7 euro in their with the US stuff, but mount the US distributor and injectors, and some minor mods later.(I could give the details) and you have a 250-260rear wheel hp set up with headers.

With the 5 liter , you will get around 290-295 rear wheel with headers.

Ive done both. personally, I would do the 5 liter conversion. However, I did the 4.7 US conversion with the very low compression with the original US heads, and the euro cams and got 242 rear wheel hp. figure, with the euro heads, you would gain about 15hp over my set up ithe the higher compression and better flow.( larger valves and ports)

The nice thing about keeping the FI all US, is that there are no gotchas with the ecu, electrical, fuel, etc. you just plug and play. the only thing the euro stuff will give you, is the larger mass flow device, and thats not a big deal.

Let us know what you decide to do!!!

Thanks for the replys, I'm on kind of a short budget though for the Euro motor conversion. Although, selling the Weissach for however much they bring, and buying an 87-newer 928S4 auto had crossed my mind. Would that be the better way to go?
Thanks

Ive been very very happy with my S4 race car. Heck, for the difference in cost, I was able to get the Big brakes, better intake, bigger heads, 4 valves/cyl, cool nose and tail body sections,
new borg warner trans.,and better electric fans. all for a cost less than if I was going to do the mods above , on my own.
I already was thinking about :
brakes, ($2k)
intake conversion ($1k)
trans. rebuild ($2k)
so, for a little more, I got the entire new deal.
