Post Wheels - 2002 996 Lightweights

I remember seeing a pic of another 928 with the 2002 996 18" lightweight wheels. I think the look is fantastic. I can't find pic now because someone has misplaced the 'Search' button for looking up old posts. Anyway, the ones I am looking at are 18x8 fronts with 225 rubber and 18x10 rear with 285 rubber. I will be able to have them put on the car to verify fitment before purchasing.

Questions:

1. Whoever has them, did you have a problem with the front offset (ET50)?

2. Do you have 285 rubber on your rears? (sounds like a question that belongs on a different board) I thought 265 was about the max, but with the offset of 65, my calc is that it will be close.

3. Can these wheels handle the extra weight of a 928? (about 250lbs heavier than a 996 - about 8% heavier)

Thanks,

Cameron

Cameron:

I think it was a guy from Australia who had done this. If I recall correctly he had done a complete overhaul of the car top to bottom. You might search on the board for restoration topics.

I LOVE these wheels too, and I understand that they are quite lightweight as well.

I'm sure weight would not be an issue, its offset and he dealt with it somehow.

A 10 inch rear wheel with a 65mm offset will fit fine on your car. The wheel will extend toward the fender lip .5 inch more than stock, and an additional 1.5 inches engine-side.

I'm running 10.5x18x59mm on 285x35's, and it's a perfect fit. That combo extends towards the fender .99 inch more than stock, and an additional 1.51 inches engine-side. I have no clearance issues, and it looks fantastic.

So Cameron,
This means since I bought your car, you have to sell me the current Mille Miglias off the car now right? And they have to be at the special "guy who bought your car" price right?
Can't hurt to ask anyway.
See ya,
Jay (3-5 more days till it gets here!)

It was someone from Australia. The wheels looked great on the car in my opinion. He made custom control arms for it to work though.

What a restoration!! Thoroughly impressive.

Thanks for the responses. I looked all over my garage and could not find any hunks of 6061 T6 aluminum, so I am out of luck on the custom upper control arm. :^)

I have seen numerous posts and some 928 commercial websites that identify 18" X 8" front wheels with a 50 or 52 offset and 225 rubber as suitable (although perhaps not optimal) for the front. With the risk of starting another wheel debate, has anyone using this configuration of wheel /rubber on the front had a significant negative experience? Has anyone had a significant positive experience?

Jay,

I sent you a separate email. Have a look and let's talk.

Thanks again, everyone.

Cameron,

I like them too but couldn't find a good picture of them on an S4 so I made my own. Took the car from the Tire Rack wheel machine and grafted in the wheels from that old thread mentioned above. Here it is:

Wheel Enhancement quoted on a set with Bridgestone S-03's for a little over $3000. This did not include center caps but did include a "small" spacer for the rear which they claimed was required.

I didn't ask them about fitment of 285's.

I looked into it last a couple oif months ago and decided to go for the Boxster set of the same wheels for my future 928 S4 or GT.

The Boxster ones aren't as wide in the rear and the ET was a bit better for a 928.

The 225's will fit fine with that offset. You need to keep the ride hieght up at a stock level though.

285's will be pretty tight if not too tight. I have 275/40-17's on my 89 GT and I have about a 1/4" of clearance, NOT MUCH. Keep in mind that this fit is with the factory rolled fender lips unique to the '89's. I think Kim Crumb runs 285/30-18's in the back of his '89 GT. I also recall him saying that it was an awfully tight squeeze. Running more negative camber helps keep the tires away from the fenders during wheel compression too.

Good Luck

Brent, it all depends on the offset. Tom Falkenberg is running 295/30/18's on the back of his '89 S4 Auto, and as far as I know has no clearance issues. They definitely look great on there too!!!! I'm running 275/35/18's on the back of my GT, and have plenty of room to spare. I have the 18" AT Rivas, and I actually run a 1/4" spacer on the hub to get them outboard more. If I'd been willing to fess up the extra $$$$$$$, I'd have gone with the 285 S03's. BTW, those wheels look great on your GT. Definitely a rare color '89 GT. Only 2 documented with Chuck Z. One of my co-workers has the other one.

hey chris,
saw my name so i had to chime in. can't wait to see you again at sitm.
as far as the wheels/tires, i have run several setups.
boxster wheels 18x7.5 et 50 225/40/18, 18x9 et 52 265/35/18 easy fit.
kinesis 18x9 et 62 255/35/18, 18x10.5 et 52 285/30/18 also easy fit on the s4 or gt
twin turbo 18x8 et 50 225/40/18, 18x11 et 45 295/30/18 needed to flare the rear fender a bit on the s4 to fit.
forgeline 17x9.5 et 68 275/40/17, 17x11 et 52 315/35/17 slight rub on forward control arm eliminated with minimal spacer.
i think 315 is about the max you can go without an effort on the rear. the 275 fronts fit fine other than some rub at full lock.
