Default Blower motor problem

Well finally got my car back from the body shop this week. Started installing the new parts I got from Roger earlier this week. When I bought the car it had a bad blower motor and resistor pack. I got a used blower from Stan and a new resistor pack from Roger. Before changing the resistor pack I plugged the blower motor in and it only ran on high setting. I then changed the resistor pack and the blower motor runs on high no matter what the setting in the car. Anyone have any idea on how to go about trouble shooting this problem? Thanks, Jason

That's a quick bump.

If the resistor pack is the switch, I think I'd take a multimeter to it. Sounds like a short at the switch.

Sorry for the quick bump. I'm wanting to get this thing back together this weekend and it's too late to be calling roger on it. Happen to know which wire I should be checking with the ohm meter. Guess I could pull out the wiring diagram.

Was the resistor pack an direct fit or is some wire-reversing necessary? There was some talk about having to adapt the available late resistor packs to earlier cars.

I was "under the impression" that they're were no longer new "old model" resistor packs available, only used versions. That may be your problem. Someone who is more electronically gifted than I am may be able to tell you how a new one could be used in an older application - if you can verify that impression.

I know this isn't much help, but there's a chance it's the problem.

Good luck and keep us posted.

Here's one of the places I saw the reference to new and old resistor packs. Its not real clear which version he ended-up installing, but the mention of NLA/ superceding caught me I. Hope somebody else chimes-in on this who's been there. I have a similar problem also, and am ready to dig in today.

Is your heater set to defrost? If so, that relay may be activating it.

Running on high on whatever setting indicates that the bi-metal safety switch in the resistor pack stays closed. Can you tweak the switch to open and see if that solves the problem?

Only the old model had this protection device. Newer style disables the blower when it overheats.

Its most likely a connection problem if you are connecting a new style resistor pack on a car originally configured for an old style resistor pack.

The new style pack is actually a better design but has a slightly different connector assignment. You can swap the pins in the car side connector to make it work correctly.

You need to remove the existing connection to Pin 8 it is no longer needed then swap the existing pin 6 connection to pin 8 - it should work normally.

Ok guys once again the list saved the day. This list is worth it's weight in Gold. A very special thanks to Roger and Alan. Alan's idea worked like a champ. It will be so nice having a blower that works. I will have to clean out the leaves and debris and vacume off the heater core before I get it all installed. I do have 1 question though. What was pin 8 originally for? Jason
