Was at Road America for the first time last year covering the ALMS race. What a very cool place. Great track and surrounding countryside. I can see why you'd go there so often (besides the beer).

Ok you're on for this summer. No we didn't hang out, would have loved to but I was busy as hell at the race. I need to find a hotel room a little closer this year and stay an extra day or two.

If NASCAR and ALMS are on at the same time, I'm watching the sports cars.

That is not real racing. That is an arms race.Once you get past the technology and the cool factor, there is not a more boring form of motor sports, IMO. It was the pinnacle at one point where skill took a larger seat than downforce and electronics, and you actually saw passes and lead changes.

I've driven a detuned Indy car around the oval at TMS at about 160. There were maybe 8 other cars out, pretty well spaced. All I could think of (besides watching the RH front tire and wondering if it would blow, what would happen to me) was the fact that the NASCAR boys run 25% faster, and they run three wide in places, inches from (or touching) the car ahead. For 266 laps.

Sure, they're only making LH turns on the ovals/tri-ovals, but doing it in traffic at those speeds requires skill and *****. There is no questioning that fact.

There are few types of unlimted racing left, the Warbirds at Reno come to mind.
Run what cha brung and hope ya brung enough.

I liked NASCAR in the "early" days (though the mid-70's?) I know that the current drivers are also gifted and brave and the racing is real, but the personality's been corporatized and marketed out. The boys of the WWF are athletes, after all, but I don't care about them either.

What do y'all think of sprint car racing? Anybody been to one? Close and deafening is always a plus at the racetrack. ;-)
