based on what your describing it sounds like the starter isnt getting enough juice to turn the engine over or the battery is going dead. So since she is cranking try removing the plugs and either cleaning them or install a new set and with a fully charged battery try to start the car.

[edit ]You said it is an '85. Is it an A/T? Jim B. has reiterated correctly to me this is not a cold start, but a warm engine and it points more to TBF.[end edit]
check flex plate, remains of grinding in oil. Good luck.

Hey guys, sorry for the delayed post. After
for a few weeks I finally had it towed to the closest 928 shop (eurowerks - these guys are awesome). The problem was the cable from the throttle control to the engine. The connector pins had come loose and weren't providing good gas flow information so it created an environment too rich for the engine to fire (plugs were drenched). Anyway, they glued the pins back (replacing that cable altogether will be a serious job because of where it's located) and she fired right up.
Now I have some electrical gremlins like my rear hatch, and CLS button in the dash. I'll post each of the problems separately in other threads.
Thanks for all the suggestions.

I'm not sure what plug/cable they are refering to, but I'm glad to hear you are running well again.

A fresh fully charged auto battery will be about 12.7v-12.8v never any more... certainly not 13v or higher.
While you are actually cranking this will drop substantially - well below 10v maybe as low as 8v at the starter motor and maybe down to 10v even at the battery terminals.
Most people don't understand that the starter motor is a huge huge drain on the battery - many hundreds of amps - enough to easily melt normal sized wires in a few seconds. The connections have to be really good - good sized conductors and clean tight connections. I'd clean yours at the battery and at the ground point since it sounds like you were cranking slowly anyway - even though it starts it sounds like there was another issue there worth fixing. I'd also have the battery checked - it may well be damaged too.
