Porkers,
Anyone know anything about there being an 88 euro GT. I just brought a GT engine at the weekend to replace a blown one from my 90 GT (see other threads). The engines are different in a number of areas,, does anyone know exactly what these differences are?
As an example,, the crank vibration dampers are different (the older is orange). There is some kind of connected piping from below all the exhaust ports on the heads on the older engine. The clutch on the 90 has two plates and the 88 one?
Question is, as the Porsche Parts system shows the GT starting production in 89,,, what have I got as a replacement engine? a club sport?? souped S4,,, the heads have GT in faded blue on each end,,,, my 90 does not.
Finally, the car from which the engine was extracted had all the hallmarks of a GT, twin pipes, boge dampers, manual box, GT badge but with "sport" as well. I have the chassis number and it was an 88 for sure but what was it??
Regards.
I'm a little confused and any help would be appreciated.

I forgot,,, the engine number is an M28.47 - 85K****. This again points to a GT.
Cheers.

In 88 they made some CS's (Club Sports) which was the prelude to the GT's. Could be an enginge from one of those.
Is there a reason they would have used parts from a car that didn't exist at the time but was about to be released the next year.
Does anyone know the technical stuff for a CS?? was the engine number M28.47 - 85k**** ?
Also, if I have the engine number and chassis number can I get the spec on the car from Porsche??

The car is three hundred miles away and is a total loss (front end smash). The car is an 88 928,,, it has a badge on the back stating GT and Sport but other than that I can't be sure as I did not read the build sticker when I was there. These stickers are easy to by and put on an S4. The car was at the top of a 4 car stack of wrecks.
I guess the biggest question is what euro car had the engine number "M28.47 85K****" in 88???
And if it was a Club Sport,,,,,, what are the engine differences between that and a 90 GT???

Guys,
The chassis number states that the car is an 88. Actual registration marks are removed before a car is broken,,,, to prevent ringing.
I'm pretty sure after reading some websites that the car is most likely an 88 euro CS or SE.
My 90GT engine designation is "M28.47 85L" and the new engine is numbered "M28.47 85K". What I need to try and find out is what are the differences between these two and also,,,, as I'm now building one engine from the two, what parts are interchangeable and what are not. I have read that the S4 produced 316 bhp, the CS produced 326 bhp and that the GT produced 320 bhp. Obviously this means there must be some differences,,, who would know these?? can I get porsche to tell me??? the main thing I want to know is if I need to go back to the car I got the engine from and get the brain or exhaust or something else that needs to be used with this lump in order to make it rock and roll like it should. There is a possibility I suppose that it won't run at all well with out the original brian?? who knows ??
Any one have a clue about this please drop me a line ASAP as I'm eager to start the rebuild this coming weekend.
Cheers.

Nobby, I asked about the SE on 4-9-03 look through the archives. There is a link to a site on Phill's web that has a picture and info on the SE. I also remember the guy (Gary) stating that there were only like 40 some SE's made? Also on page 92 in the Porsche 928 Performance Portfolio there is a great write up. Good luck and keep us posted on the progress.
Burning Brakes
The US GT was rated at 326. I don't think there is any difference in the engines, US vs UK. I am also pretty sure that the CS/SE models used the same engine as the GT.
Good Luck

Guys,
Bit tricky this one.
Porsche have confirmed here were 68 manuals imported to the UK in 88 and 42 were SE's, I don't have an exact figure how many were CS's but it looks like single figures. My donner car is more likely to be an SE over a CS as the VIN is in the right range and the SE did have a 320 bhp uprated motor (the GT was not yet out). As well as having what became the GT motor the SE was fully loaded where the club sport was a bare bones track car,,,, used apparently by some of the porsche techies for track day fun at the weekends.
SE's only came in four colours, one was black same as my donner car and all came with black interiors, same again. SE's had sunroof's and aircon etc where CS's did not and I have yet to confirm these items on the donner car.
I have called Porsche and given them the donner car VIN number and engine number and they are going to call me back in a day or two with all the info on the car and engine in relation to a normal GT. They were extremely accommodating and to speak to one person and then know he is going to get the info is much better than being passed around the houses for 45mins and getting nothing at the end of it,,,, an all too common event now a days. I also have a call into the scrap dealer to check the car for sunroof and rear washwipe (not present on the CS but on the SE).
If the car is a club sport then it will be a terrible shame that it is being striped for parts as we speak,,,,, as there were so few made. The scrap dealer just thinks it a 928!!! even an SE is a fairly rare car.
When I know I will let you know, thanks for everyones help.

Maybe the donor engine came from this car?

Spooky,
I checked the site and the smash was on the other side of the front of the car. The cars look identical though. Further checking revealed the VIN's are different. What is really interesting is that the back of that car had "928 SE sport" and the car I got my engine from had "928 GT sport",,,,,, and as yet I have still to confirm exactly what my donner car is or was in 88.
I expect all will be clear when Porsche call me back.
Regards and thanks for the links, very interesting.
