Default sunroof removal - HHHEEEEEEELLLPP.....

OK, so yesterday I started cutting into the sunroof assembly...
The german engineers where not kidding when they put that contraption together... it's like a vault...
I got some pointers from Constantine the other day, but I must be doing something wrong.

Is the whole sunroof frame wleded to the roof?

Can someone help me where to place the cutting line?

Does anyone have some pictures of their removal process?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Wish I would have taken pictures of mine. It looks like you haven't removed the sunroof yet. Do that before trying to cut the steel, it will make cutting much easier. You will see a steel lip around the sides and front. I used those as the guide for cutting. On the rear continue to cut as you're currently cutting.

Lastly listen to Constatine - I followed his advice.. and am happy with the results.

At least you don't have a roll cage to try and cut around...

You don’t need to cut anything to remove the sunroof. Disconnect everything that’s attached to that black cross beam and the sunroof will pop out. There are several bolts on the side rails/guides and I think that’s it. It’s been a while since I removed a sunroof but it really isn’t that difficult. Once the sunroof is out, you can remove the black cross beam and then you need to remove the motor to pull the cables out. Then you can start cutting the rail out if you want.

I remember Devek helping me take out the 25lbs of stuff that also includes all the sheet metal around the sunroof. I think we used a nibbler to take most of it out. it was tought work, but a lot of weight up top that is good to remove!

Mark 25 LBS ? I've had mine out and didn't think it was that much. You might want to look into a gym membership

I think he is talking the roof panel, and all the metal underneath, and tracks and motor and all that junk...I'll weigh all mine once I get the sawzall out and start cutting away at that structure. It looks welded in there really well.

Sebastian,

The sunroof panel needs to be out of the car. Then cut along the inner sides of the sunroof drip rail portion leaving the boxed roof support intact along the outside edges. Then cut along the back as you started to do. I used a cutting wheel but be very careful since you are working near your head at this point! The part you are cutting out is the inner sheet metal panel that's between the drip rails.

I would also cover the electrical panel, pod and floor with a tarp to limit the amount of metal debris going into those areas. Don't need any electrical gremlins later.

Good luck and becareful!
Constantine
