After market muffler ??'s
I have 2 flow master 40 series, the input an output are in the middle of the mufflers. Will these work? or do I need to get mufflers with same side in/out?

I used the Flowmaster mufflers when I redid the 82 exhaust, but not the 40's. Here's a link to the page. I really love the sound, not too loud, but nice and throaty.

My single 3" in/out is on the left side of the tranny and is center/center. It's a Magnaflow 4x9. I don't have pics here at work, but you can probably search exhaust threads and find a picture of how it fits.
Same side in/out would be easier and would allow you to use larger mufflers.

I bought the ones you are describing from Pep Boys locally, same price as over internet, but avoiding shipping costs. Might work for you, too.
Also, there exists from either Magnaflow or Flowmaster (forget which) a unit that has entry and exit on the same end of a similar sized muffler. That could conceiveably allow avoiding routing the pipes past the gas tank, but its a departure from what has been reported in everything I've read here.
