Guys,
I found a 3 hour DVD set on rebuilding a 722.315 Mercedes auto transmission. I think our 4 speeds are the 722 model, but not sure if it is the .315. Can anyone tell me if the 722.315 video is the same for the transmission in out cars and what specific model we use? The one I am wanting to rebuild is from a '91 S4.

Thanks

What model transmission does the '91 S4 have? It should be a 722 something. I was hoping someone would know if the 722.315 in the DVD (last post) would be the same or at least close enough to guide me through this.

Mike,
According to my technical information the 91 S4 auto is equiped with a A28.16 (Porsche Designation) which is equivalent to a MB 722.3 automatic transmission.
The numeral 3 in the 722.3 designates the model of Transmission and it is the 4 speed/6 Bolt/Large Case transmission.
The two numbers following the 3, '15' designate the type of automobile or version number (MB inforamation).
In view of the foregoing I would say the the DVD would be OK, however, Steve would be the one to confirm this.
Please advise if the DVD can be purchased and if so can you advise the cost and address details?

Tails, I am still on the fence about the DVD. I will make a decision in the next week or two. I will post the vendor for it, no problem.

Steve Cattaneo, do you have the .pdf finished for this job, or is it a work in progress? I would like to know if this is something I can possibly get/buy from you before I start this job, or if it will not be ready in time.

Please let me know.
Thanks

I have a transmission on the bench, rebuilding will begin on Monday. I can post the necessary information with pictures, this coming weekend.

Great news. Thank you Steve!

Are you planning on installing the updated B2 piston or any of the other upgrades in Glen's?

Parts are very expensive, only replace parts that inspection warrants.

WSM tools that I made, were from various commonly available supplies...

Here's the transmission support from the WSM

Here's the cradle I made from plywood. Trans without differential is supported upside down on this. Pictured base (1-1/2" thk x 12" x 24" long), front support, rear support with cutout.

Here's the torque converter tool. I just used bailing wire wrapped around the bolts to make two handles.

For the main pump cover, WSM shows guide pins and pull bolts.

I just cut off the bolt heads to make the pins. Standard metric bolts, these in stainless.

The B3 piston is the hardest one to install. WSM shows this (2) tool.

I just used one of these clamps instead. Not real easy, but it worked (with the valve body removed).

For the internal pistons, WSM shows these tools...

With some common hardware, I made presses that allowed compressing the springs enough to release the clips. PVC pipe was easy to knotch for access to the clip when everything is compressed. These worked nicely.

You need some decent calipers to make the measurements...

More hardware to build a truss for counter holding the tranny while removing the pinion nut. Hardest part.

Thanks for the pics Borland. It should not be hard to duplicate.

Steve, how did the rebuild go last week for Glen? Were you able to take some pics and throw together some instructions?

Thanks

Steve,
Thanks for the info. I am looking forward to reading your procedures.

I have another question about the updated B2 piston. What benefits do you get from this upgrade?
Here is another old post from you I dug out of the Rennlist archives:
If the transmission is being rebuilt
make sure the updated B2 servo piston is installed, part# MB A107 270 0432
and bushing # 126 277 0850,as an added benefit install a shift kit PART #
55C011, and accumulator ring kit K55301DT you cane buy them from transtar
parts phone # 1 800 932 6699.

What benefits do these other parts have on the transmission? I called transtar
industries (www.transtarindustries.com) and they do not have these parts. The sales guy mentioned that they do not have many hard parts for the 722.3 transmission. Where do you get these parts?

Thanks

Bump for Steve Cattaneo.

Did you get a chance to throw together some instructions for the rebuild?

Thanks

Steve,
In one of your previous threads I recall that you recommended cutting the "T" teflon ring on the updated B2 piston, similar to a piston ring to get a better seal on the cylinder wall.

I note in one of the publication I have by "TransTec" that they recomment that the outboard side of the B2 piston be machined to give a 30 degree cut under the "T" ring. Do you agree with this modification, as it will give extra pressure on the ring against the cylinder wall without the need for cutting the ring?
