How much is just enough? HP that is.

And personally, I'm not too interested in a tire shredding beast where you can't even touch the loud pedal for fear of losing the back end instantly and ending up in the weeds. For that, I'd go with an American Muscle car (or Australian - right mates?), or a rat rod style hot rod.
One guy in my buddy's car club built a wicked Model A-based hot rod with a stroked small block. He took it for exactly one shake-own drive before putting it back in the garage and completely re-doing it to include a full rollcage. Apparently he had his life flash before his eyes upon getting into the throttle. He's since tried all sorts of suspension tuning (his other car is a road racing 'Stang) and sticky tires but the little demon car just won't hook up. It's basically useless for performance driving, but it does get a lot of attention.
I'd rather have a more useable car than an attention getter.

It's nice having an OB - right off the bat a 250+ pound weight advantage over S4's.

Great info guys. Just what I was hoping to gather. Thanks!
And yes, Ken, let's not limit this to S4's and later. Too many variaties of 928's out there to limit it to that - so its wide open now! As it will become anyway!
I was just trying to limit it to get some type of usable comparison, plus I own an S4.
What do you want to spend? Good point.
I don't have a budget or even a plan. That's why I'm asking.
And don't have a preferred method. Will start with the usual recommended approach:
1. Get the S4 engine back to well tuned, well maintanined condition. That alone will take a fair amount of money and time for me.
2. RR suspension bits, brakes, any other mechanicals that need maint. - same deal, time and $$ will not be insubstantial.
3. A few simple mods - wheels and tires, exhaust, chip - maybe custom mapped. Suspension possibly. More $$$ and time.
4. HP increase - to what extent and within what budget, and by what methods?
Number 4 is the big unknown for me.

How much horsepower is so subjective. I was able to hit 50 MPH going downhill on my mountain bike on fire roads, and that was fast enough. 130 HP in a RWD Fiat is enough to play Dukes of Hazzard on skinny 185s, and a well driven OB on a twisty road is a seriously fast trip. But my S4 always seemed to want more power.
Odd that.
Odd that.

Stage 1: everything under the hood functioning 100% first before going after mods.
Stage 2: handling (suspension/wheels/tires), exhaust (blackbird intake?) and sharktuner.
Then: drilled crank, accusump and start going to the track?
I think my S4 is pretty fast for a street car just with stage 1 and an x pipe.

Well if I get 650 RWHP with 2700lbs that puts me a 1RWHP:4.15lbs.
I do agree with 928andRC15 get everything working properly, then upgrade suspension and braking, then go after the power. That is how I am doing it as well.
I can break 245s free with my 310 in 1st and 2nd, I have run 275s for awhile and they would allow me to actually fully use all of the power that 1st gear transfered. That was only in a straight line though, the moment I turned I couldnt use full power in first or I would just kick the back end out.

I think 400 to 450 at the rear wheels makes for a fun 928. Not too bad with traction, enough to get into plenty of trouble.
Then you get used to it, and need a bit more........ 500 rwhp makes for a real nice car. You need to upgrade some things along the way, but still not too bad.
Then you get used to it, and need a bit more..........shooting for 600 rwhp early this spring. That should be "just enough". Anything more would need a new (bigger) SC unit, and who knows what else. That's the fun thing with boost, pretty easy to add just a bit more..........
Just for the record, even where mine is now, it is pretty easy to drive. The learning curve for the new power is definitely there, more so as the power levels go up. Power comes on pretty linear and you develope a good feel for the added power. Downside is you really can't just let anyone else drive it. So far, besides me only Murph has had the keys.
Hopefully about 600 rwhp will be enough..........

i think 400-440 rwhp is perfect. I have 320, and its a slug on the track. on the street, its plenty fast. I mean, It all depends on what you want to do with it. right now, it burns race rubber at 4000rpm in 1st, even if you roll on the throttle. however, it could be a lot faster in my opinion in 3rd and certainly 4th. the acid test is on the track. the vipers just pull out and make mince meat of me off a slow turn. its not a huge difference, but its a few car lengths by the end of the straight. (see video difference on my video signature line comparing my car to a viper with near 500rwhp)

I will venture into this with the following story:
My 600 Cummins (in my Peterbilt) is by far the most potent diesel engine I've had to date. It's last dyno put 627 on the ground (mind you, this engine is rated 625 @ 2100 at the flywheel).
Could I use more? You bet. Do I want more? Of course I do.
So, to answer the question about the 928.....
AS MUCH AS I CAN GET.
