They switched to ports 3 and 7 in 1990 due to temperature variations of 4 and 8 falsely activating the system (3 and 7 were thought to fluctuate less in temp).
Why are the sensors there?

To shut off one bank of fuel injectors, in case of ignition failure, so that the cats don't catch fire.

What are the ports used for in some ROW, non-cat cars?

Air injection to all eight exhaust ports.

On 85-86 32Vs, what does terminal 'A' do on the A-B-C diagnostic connector at the engine?

Lamda (O2 sensor) range finder.

Is it mentioned in the WSM?

No.

Having pulled that one and inspected it, I found it to be a quite solid casting, one piece...

Because I remember your post long ago on the PacNW list about pulling the hood and standing on your head to fix yours, so I thought perhaps I had better check all of mine. Good to go...
